I have a website that is a news crawler and compiles these 'links' into a database. So if I frame these news articles into my site is that illegal? By framing I mean that you stay on my site when you click a news article link...Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a lawyer, but I would think - at a MINIMUM - you would have to indicate true ownership of the article. I believe the AP even has a copyright rule in whereby if you use more than 5 words of an article of theirs, you are in violation (or something like that). It's always best to get permission, and, if you can't, to provide an external link to the actual article.

Well it is technically it is a 'real' link to the article. For example, if you click on a link to an article from my site, it would take you to the actual article 'within' a frame on my page...

So if you click an article from the NY Times it frames in the article on my page from NYT.com but you never 'truly' navigate away from my site (to NYT).

As long as you are giving credit to the author and source, I don't see what the problem would be.

Sounds OK as long as source and credit are given ... you also link to the site so the recipient site would receive a visit in their logs.

You're essentially opening a link to their site, within a frame. Google use this for things like their Images search. It's fine, provided you don't try to modify the content of the frame (i.e. their page you are linking to) in any way - so any ads they are running etc will still display and such.
