Hey folks! I wonder if anyone could comment on learning webflow in terms of a platform to build from for making a living from Web Development? Is it worthwhile? Can you use it to build sites for clients? Is it better to go down the full UX angle? Even HTML coding(although never been overly interested in coding).

I built this website on a page builder on Shopify, and discovered I really enjoy it. More the design and creative sign, along with catchy text to grab, and keep your audiences attention. Media Marketing is something I would love to get into, but at this stage really not sure what direction to head in? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

www.home-fitness-world.com (click on the Find my fit button to get onto the page builder side)

Also just to add I've been learning photoshop(who hasn't) and final cut pro over the last few months for photo and video editing in the hope I can somehow bring them all together. If anyone has any experience with any of these subjects I'd love to hear.

Thanks so much in advance.
Gareth.

I've been using Webflow since 6 months and i can say i became an Expert on it.
You can do whatever you want with it.

I don't want to sell you Webflow, just give it a try yourself, i think that's the only way you can discover how you feel about it.

Thanks for your comments. I'll do that. Have you been getting clients from it? What had their feedback been? I've been using several website builders without html and CSS. And been able to do some half decent stuff. But I wanted to get to a really high level. So wondered the possibilities with webflow. I shall give it a try and see what happens.

Thanks again.

Well, on Upwork there is a growing request of Webflow specialists.
I got 2 jobs thanks to being specialized in it.
It's not really the direction i want to take though.

I don't know what kind of clients are you targeting, i don't think the normal local business or company would care about what you use.
Results are what they care about.

You can do whatever you want with Webflow.

Do you already know web dev? If not, I'd say learn web dev. Don't bother yourself with webflow or similar things. If you go down the web dev route you could still use website like shuffle.dev to create templates. Web development is better to know, you could one day build your own saas or mobile app if you learn React Native.

I've built with Webflow for clients before and would reckon there are web designers who may even use it exclusively. There are pros and cons to using Webflow, though I will say that I find it to be one of the better visual front end editors.

I think if you combine it along with the foundational knowledge of HTML, CSS and JS you can become even more powerful. No one can stop you then!

I also recently found another editor that could be promising. They aren't as refined as Webflow yet, but they do have some features that excite me such as free code export.

Hey Beswaax, thanks for your comments. That sounds a sensible route to take. My only concern is that I'm 40 and eager to get out of my current profession. I have another couple of months before I'll be back in the thick of it. So wanted to offer basic websites for businesses. Truth be told I want to get into all of it. Video editing, media marketing etc. Offer the full package. But I know that will take time.

My question then, how long would it take to go deep into the full development route? I done a weeks coding course, java script and python. It was a difficult skill to learn. How just wonder if I could go back to this after learning webflow initially. To potentially offer a small income maybe in the next 3-6months through webflow.

Thanks again for your comments.

Hi Devampre. Thanks for your comments. How long would it take to get to a basic level for webflow and HTML etc combined? I think I only have another 2 months tops of full time learning to try to master something. Or at least offer basic website building to start any sort of income at all. I don't want to cut corners or offer a service that isn't up to a high standard I would expect from myself. But at the same time was looking to at least pull in any sort of small cashflow to pick up momentum while learning HTML.

Any advice would be amazing.

Thank you.

Well it should take about 6 months full time I'd say if you want to learn backend + frontend well, but you don't have to do that all at once necessarily. You should check this out first: FrontendMasters, its a very quick bootcamp that should not take too long, it's also high quality. After that bootcamp you should be able to build basic websites, pair that with learning some Tailwind and you should be able to create beautiful websites in no time. If you want to learn fullstack development check this course out: Fullstack Open.

Can't thank you enough for all that information. I've set aside 4hours this afternoon to work on web development stuff, so will dive right in.

I was offered an opportunity to do coding at codeclan in Edinburgh for free(normally 4 or 5k), but the coding side scares me a little. I might also look into this in terms of basic coding to get me started for a little light web development work.

Thanks again for you all your help with everything. Very much appreciated indeed.

Gareth.

Hi there. Just a quick message to say currently working my way through the Bootcamp through the links you gave me. I'm doing this as well as learning webflow which I'm sure I'll pick up quickly enough.

Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and helping me find a suitable route to hopefully becoming a full front-end developer one day.

Hey! After doing a bit more research I've decided to go the full coding route as well as learn webflow. I think the 2 will compliment each other and allow more opportunity for more niched down work, as well as stand out from what is already a massive surge in web designers to improved builders such as webflow.

Good luck with it all.

Gareth.

I built our company website using Webflow. And I built the website of our partner in Holland, too. It's very easy. It's got great SEO out of the box. It's extremely versatile and viable for huge companies with millions of visitors.

The no-code revolution is happening quickly. I'm can't see many arguments for NOT using a tool like webflow to build websites, today. Considering that, I can see how building a webflow design agency could generate plenty of profits. There are already some very reputable no code agencies such as 80/20 and more associated with Tiny Capital and WeCommerce.

I critiqued some proposals recently on the forum, here you go: EXECUTION - From Copy To Commerce - The Journey | The Fastlane Entrepreneur Forum (thefastlaneforum.com)

It was for copywriting, but the same principles apply.

If you want longer tutorials, read these 2 gold threads:

GOLD! - Lex DeVille's: 15 Days to Freedom - Make Money Copywriting in 15 Days or Less | The Fastlane Entrepreneur Forum (thefastlaneforum.com)

NOTABLE! - Lex DeVille's 2019 Step-By-Step Upwork Tutorial for Brokeass Bootstrap Beginners Who Need Cash Now! | The Fastlane Entrepreneur Forum (thefastlaneforum.com)

Both will teach you how to craft proposals that get responses.

If you want to learn front-end coding, like HTML/CSS/JavaScript I'd say: absolutely.
I've seen several people go with Webflow without the knowledge of the above and... nope, you can't make it right.
You can't create good stuff without knowing what is flexbox and how css grid works...
Not talking about integrating some JS script and having some advanced functionalities.

But if your goal is starting an agency or freelancing, don't go crazy over learning 10 languages, backend, etc... it's just not necessary.

I believe I need to improve my proposal letter

My experience as Webflow Specialist on Upwork in bullet points:
  • 90% (if not 95%) of job posts won't turn into a hire: out of 20 application, 18 jobs expired after 1 month, no one hired
  • There's a lot of competition
  • I just got lucky. No tricks, no special proposal.
Somehow a guy liked my being straightforward, or being available immediately, or perhaps my portfolio.
He hired me and luckily was a very good client.
  • Even if i have a 5 star review, overtaken the "+$1k earned" criteria, and a portfolio with 6-7 pieces, i still didn't get considered that much

But here's what you can do to increase your chances: get hyper specialized.
I didn't do this, because I decided to take another route so i kind of dropped Upwork nowadays.

Go through the job posts, group them by "kind of application" or "tech stack".
Example: multi-step form in Webflow; or membership site with Webflow + Memberstack; and so on.

Learn how to develop that specific kind of application and make case studies: that should help to rise above 98% of people there.

I believe you could learn webflow quicker than HTML and CSS.

I wouldn't worry about mastering anything in only 2 months. But, I believe that is more than enough time to learn the stuff that matters.

Also, don't worry about not knowing certain things or making mistakes. You'll do good, just keep moving forward.
