So I'm going to build a website and I'm thinking wordpress. I'd love any resources any of ya'll may have regarding:
-Best hosting solution and type to get
-Best way to learn wordpress
-Any other suggestions...

I intend on outsourcing this in the future but I want to learn it before I outsource it.

Thanks for asking! I totally blanked on the site. It will be a simple 5 page site designed to give information about my new business, I think it will be Home, About, Blog, Social, Contact. It will also have an opt-in for a whitepaper on the front page. The main call to action will be to schedule a phone strategy session to discuss and craft a strategy as we're selling consulting.

I've also thought about running a design contest through 99designs to get the imaging done.

Ahh alright! Wordpress would definitely be your best bet then in order to get something up and running.

To learn how to use WordPress I'd simply Google information as needed.

You might as well start with something cheap for hosting like BlueHost. You'll probably spend a little while just learning anyways. You'll no doubt need to upgrade in the future, but for getting started and learning I think it'd be fine.

No specific resources, but I guarantee any problem you run into will be able to be answered by Google.

Check out BluDomain.com. They have simple templates that would probably fit your need. They range in price from 50-500 bucks, but the $100 ones are great. It is an annual fee for hosting and the template. It is very user friendly and you also have constant access to the admin page to make changes at anytime...i.e. not contacting a webmaster and waiting for someone to make the changes for you...

Quick, easy, clean and pretty damn good looking too!

Wordpress is perfectly fine for SEO side of things and should be more than flexible enough to design it the way you want from what it looks like.

Might want to consider hiring a designer the first time around for the main site, and making a few sub sites on your own to promote the main website.

WordPress.com — Get a Free Blog Here is very good, and Build a Website - Create a Blog - Squarespace is great for starters. Tons of templates, you can customize with html, or build from scratch.

I would recommend hostgator for shared hosting. But I myself use medialayer because it runs on litespeed. For SEO hosting, go over to wickedfire and ask around.

The best way to learn wordpress is to install it and tweak the code by installing plugins and themes (Thesis, RevolutionTheme). Also it is best that you learn PHP.

I recommend using wordpress if you are starting out. I've heard it is a really good platform for beginners. If you want to learn how to build sites using html, you can always download a template website and load it into dreamweaver or a similar builder. It takes awhile but you will slowly start getting the hang of it.

If I had to do it all over again and had money, I would of hired someone.

Wordpress is completely free, so you should definitely play around with it. Just buy some web hosting, use Fantastico (which is an easy autoinstaller) to install Wordpress without any technical knowledge.

You can play with free themes (there's tons of them) from inside wordpress to find a look that you like.


SEO hosting is totally irrelevant in my opinion. Just go with HostGator for hosting. If you need help with any of this stuff, let me know.

There is nothing wrong with shared hosting to start. They are in a process of learning, and to think the limitations\problems of shared hosting would matter at the moment is silly.

Certainly, in the long run it's definitely advisable to get a dedicated host, but at the moment it gives a cheap platform to learn\experiment off of.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the idea of SEO Hosting is to get separate IP addresses for your different sites so that you can link them to each other and they'll pass link juice.

When I start a website, I'm building a mini-business of sorts, and I don't need a link from another website of mine. I know how to build backlinks from tons of other sites, so there's no need to buy special hosting just to pass a little juice. Why not rank organically instead of manipulating IP address ranking rules to get a few extra backlinks?

I'm going to go ahead and stay with my assessment that SEO hosting isn't worth it. How many million dollar websites would say that SEO hosting was the key to their success?

When you say tons of links, that would be just ~144 backlinks for your schooldestroyer.com. Most of which are from forums like this, ezinearticles (junk), and social bookmarking sites like mybloglog (junk).

Big poker sites like Online Poker - Play Online at Full Tilt Poker Room are known to buy links from established sites like Funny Videos, Funny Pictures, Flash Games, Jokes. SEO hosting for competitive niches like poker is not so useful because of the super competitiveness. However, if you go after not-so-competitive niche, SEO Hosting will be of a better use where you can build your mini empire with a single common theme.

I don't build backlinks for SchoolDestroyer hahaha I just blog there. I'm a little uneasy about revealing data of my clients' sites, but that's where I actually do link building work (including some of it outsourced). Most have ~ 700 quality links from other authority sites in the states/counties where they operate. Sorry I can't back that up with a screenshot or something, but like I said, not sure that'd be cool with my clients, so it's a safety thing. Hopefully my past honesty will lend a little to the fact that that's true.

Anyways, I also don't believe in buying links. I'm fairly sure that Matt Cutts/Google are pretty against paid links and that they shouldn't count in rankings.

It's fine if you believe in "SEO hosting" and paid links, but in my opinion they're totally unnecessary and wastes of money, especially for the beginner's help being requested in this thread. It's just a difference of ethics in SEO, and if you want to be manipulative and slightly dishonest in how you make your site appear reputable, that's your choice. You sure aren't the only one. That's the way a lot of the IM world works nowadays.

edit: I'm pretty transparent in my projects, but would you care to share some of yours? Feel free to assert your point with an example of where SEO hosting/paid links really helped you out. I'm not doubting you, but I think it'd be the exception and not the norm.

Don't believe anything Matt Cutts says. Infact, I totally ignore everything he says. Here's how you learn SEO, go to Google and type in 'insurance', 'poker', 'porn', 'credit card', etc. And check their backlinks and study them. That's how you get good at SEO. As long as you don't pay for your links via TextLinkAds, and paying them directly to the site owners, you should be fine since there's no way Google can check that.
