I'm considering starting an online hub for a niche group with the aim of providing free content and building an audience before the launch of a product. Though I'm wary of the rules about the "do what you love" approach, I want to begin with something that I have expertise on even though it might not be the most profitable audience out there in the world.
However, I do see scope to expand the niche to include other related niches to the point where the audience grows and perhaps become profitable.
Is it advisable to start small, provide content for this niche that I have the most expertise in, test the waters and then expand as suggested if/when it draws a good, interested audience? Or should I just go ahead and create the online hub and tailor content towards the broader market and just go bigger right off the bat?
