Question.
Since I am dealing with Entrepreneurship the questions that I heared the most amount of conflicting answers was around if, when and to whom you should talk about your product ideas.

On the one side it is better to get early feedback about your ideas from others, since it is really easy to be biased about the own idea. On the other side there is the danger of someone else stealing the idea and concepts that you took an effort to create.

How do you guys handle this.
I see a lot of ideas being discussed in this Forum at all kinds of stages of entrepreneurial pursuit.
Some don't seem to talk about their idea before they start getting Clients and already have at least an MVP. Others seem to create the Ideas or refine them immediatly at the start with the help of the Community.

Free idea:
I also, without luck, looked into the existence of platforms where talking about ideas is made safe. A place that keeps track who saw which idea at what time and creating a sort of NDA about those ideas (at least for a certain time after first encountered width the idea) that people have to sign to see more infos about those ideas.
This would allow people to safely talk about their ideas and get feedback, with at least having a head start to others.
This would of course need to be more refined but maybe its something someone here is interested in pursuing.

Anyways I stared but am not done yet reading Unscripted so I apologize in advance if this is addressed in there.
I also hope I'm in the right sub forum for this question.
What do you guys thing about this topic?

Ideas are worth nothing without execution.

Most people won’t ever do anything. Even if you gave them the best idea with an instruction manual they still wouldn’t.

An average idea with a great execution is worth way more than the great idea with bad execution.

Keep on reading and you’ll get your answers.

When you see the world like a producer and not like a consumer, you’ll get good ideas pretty much every day. The secret is to set your mind on one and pursue it.

This might be partly but I would definitely argue that not all ideas are equaly worth. There are good ideas and bad ones. Although Execution might be more important than the idea itself. The idea decides the potential level of outcome. Executing on a shitty idea that is neither scalable nor repeatable is no matter the execution a lost cause.

Ideas are to certain extend Customized to the entrepreneur themselves. Different people have different network, resources and skills.

Ideas are only worth copying when people actually see you making money from it. Nobody is really interested to risk their own money, time and skill for an idea they saw online. There should tens of thousands of ideas that can be googled online.

Just because someone copied your idea doesn’t mean he is eating your lunch. Unless your market is really really small. Most likely you already had competitors before you enter the space and having one more is not going to make a hell lot of difference.

There is actually from my pov, zero risk in discussing ideas that you have not even tested, openly online.

He didn't say that though did he?

Keep your ideas secret if you want.

People don't steal ideas, they steal successfully executed ideas.

If you idea is a solution to a real problem, it is most of the time at least an average idea.

A bad idea with any kind of execution will always do more than the best idea without any execution.

Everybody think they have the best and most unique idea in the world. They keep it in their head for years anyway. They even dream about all the success and sweet cash it will bring them.

Until one day they see a product that makes a killing and they’ll just say « they stole my idea! ».

If you want to keep your idea secret because it’s THE IDEA, feel free to do so.

An idea, or a business, doesn’t need to start with an idea that fit CENTS (read the book). But It can evolve into one after engaging the market.

While you spend time dreaming, entrepreneurs will spend their time resolving problems.

;)

Thanks for the feedback so far. This helped a lot.

I was in the past and am currently executing on ideas that even prior to hearing about unscripted and this forum. I will soon post my idea here to get some more feedback.

Regarding your posts I for once have to say that I appreciate the blunt honesty and "kick in the a$$" mentality people here seem to have but I have to critique the asumptions about not taking action immediately being made when someone is talking about ideas. I get however that there must be many people here for which this might show as true. Especially in this subforum.

Aside from that thank you this was very insightful.

Aha! You assume that we make assumptions.

The fact is that execution > idea. So the answer to your question is :

Don’t worry. You could tell pretty much anyone your great idea and they wouldn’t do anything with it anyway.

Our goal is not to humiliate you. Our goal is to help you. ;)

Good luck in your endeavors!
