There has been a lot of buzz lately regarding DDoS attacks across the globe, affecting quite a few very large and powerful companies. The new "trend" seems to be extortion, either pay the fee or risk LOSING everything. Since yesterday afternoon DDoS attacks started hitting http://semrush.com (a well known and major player in competition research for organic and paid search traffic) and was down all day. The CEO posted this on Twitter earlier today:
Just a few days back, http://codespaces.com was hit with an unrelenting barrage of DDoS attacks, and the attacker(s) managed to gain access to their admin panel, and deleting ALL of the data stored on Amazon's cloud servers. Including the backups. The company has since announced they are closing down(as you can see on the link). This company was probably doing north of $2m per year, to zilch, overnight(actually less time, 12 hours if I remember correctly). Some other stuff happened in China with over 300gbps attacks, but you get the point. It's currently a warzone, and no one is safe. Back up your shit before some turd tries to extort you.
