Developing a professional website (which is scheduled to launch in February with the first corporate client) has been humbling to say the least. I've noticed how easy it is to fall into the trap of "website envy" if such a thing exists. I've referenced sites like The Verge, Mashable, Tech Crunch, The Guardian, and others as models to emulate. They are awesome sources for general design ideas and a better understanding of how to present information. The problem, however, is the glaring differences between the quality of their presentation and mine, as my developer skills are still pretty green (yes, I am using prepackaged plugins when appropriate, otherwise I'd really be lost).
I don't think I'm looking for advice as much as I am encouragement. My first client (unpaid, as I'm thankful just to have them work with me and give me exposure, and I had virtually no leverage of past experience) is a prominent startup in Silicone Valley. I will not let them down. I've been putting in about 4 hours a day after 9-10 hour shifts at my JOB. It's quite exhausting, but I am seeing serious opportunities to add value for the client, and the client's audience.
This is the first time I've commanded my own ship. Even if it isn't headed for immediate treasure, it feels fulfilling. I have a strategy to monetize it in less than two years, and patience and high levels of execution will be required.
I am beginning to understand where the desert of desertion got its name; I'm basically renting land there. I look forward to moving out someday [emoji4]
