Hey forum,

I`m having a real hard time solving a problem with finding a proper service for open banking or BaaS.
Here is the problem I`m faced with and a bit of backstory.

Late 2021 as part of my strategy after quitting my job was to help more or less random people with their software problems as per @Andy Black `s excellent suggestion.
This I did just to make ends meet, but the more I leaned into it, the more people started contacting me.
Long story short a now friend of mine was trying to get a charity foundation off the ground, we found eachother on a bulgarian forum, I helped him and we started working together feverishly.
As it stands now, the charity foundation Pavel Andreev is the largest one in Bulgaria with over 16 million euros raised in these past two and a half years https://pavelandreev.bg/en and I`m its CTO.
This we built from scratch and is the main reason I havent been very active on the forum during these past years.

But here is the problem, we want to move away from banks and their manual tools as much as possible.
While Stripe provides what we need, technology wise, they dont provide it for european companies and I cant, so far, find any service which offers the automation, API and BaaS that they provide.

So far we`ve gone through more or less half the banks in Bulgaria, none of them can help, and dont get me started on bank to comapny communication...
We tried services like Revolut, or IbanFirst and others and again cant find what we need.

Here is a possible solution but I would really need some help to realize it, because I dont know how to proceed.
As it turns out, we can register a US company which can be owned by a european company and use it to conduct our business with Stripe.
But how hard is that? How do I do it and what possible problems may I ecnounter?
Even Stripe offer company registration, but I`m not sure if thats the proper solution.

We only need proper BaaS through an API and its proving immposible to find in Europe.
If anyone is interested, the first thing we`ll use the API for is to automate getting the information for IBAN transfers so we dont have to do it by hand anymore.

Have you looked at XE?

Used Wise never liked em. Found XE and used them to build my business overseas.

Havent tried XE.
What kind of service do they offer?
Can I make a business account with them and then use and API to create virtual IBANs, receive transfer to them and track said transfer in real time, again using the API?

Contact them.

Thought I post an updat on things here.
So we found a company that can actually do the things we want, at least based on the initial conversations.
We got the legal stuff out of the way, and I got my hand on their API documentation today.

It turned out that to use bank services directly OR make a company that provides such services you need a license from the country central bank.
This is in case you are in Europe offcourse.
The legal proccess of setting up such a company is insane and getting a license is not guarenteed so we are stuck using a 3rd party service provider (the company I got the API docs from) to do what we want.

I had to do research on the PSD2 directive for open banking in Europe too, and its kind of complex.
Also not all banks adhere strictly to it, even though they are required to.
From those who do, more than half have a clunky software which sort of works and is not stable.

So yea...
If there ever was an industry RIPE for disruption it is the banking industry for sure.
I swear companies, which use the open banking directive exist ONLY because banks themselves are giant corporate structures, slow to adapt to new technologies.
The only way its possible for most of them to survive is because of massive government regulations which are pure nightmare to overcome.
Basically you need A LOT of money and lawyers to open and operate a bank.
Thats the only thing that makes them resistant to disruption.

Forget about crypto, figure out how to setup a bank with 2020 tech stack and you can dominate the sector in a country within years...
