I was with a friend the other day during my last day of high school and we were discussing long term things. My friend doesn’t have the fastlane mentality or an optimistic view on what his purpose in this world is. The weird thing is that he is an awesome drummer, probably the greatest in my suburban area, and I play drums as well so I’m a decent judge.
So I suggested to him that he should start a band, market his drumming abilities to other venues, make rap beats, start giving lessons, etc.; but his exact quote was “DJ, those things aren’t reasonable.†So it got me thinking, there are a lot of people, talented and untalented, who don’t have the resources available to learn about their “unreasonable†goals. I haven’t been able to find a web site that is dedicated to helping people learn how they can accomplish their professional goals no matter how “lofty†or impractical they may be.
I related this enlightenment conversation with my friend to something similar that Jimmy Wales had when he started Wikipedia. His business mantra was knowledge for everyone, but I think a more defined subject is professional resources and knowledge for everyone.
There isn’t a web source where someone can read about common characteristics of past U.S. Presidents or helpful tips for aspiring actresses. These types of things are highly desired but every time someone describes their goal that’s over the “normal†standard, they automatically get weird looks and are considered a dreamer. If this is the society we live in, how could the common person ever find an abundant amount of information that would help them accomplish what they want to do in one place? Thus the birth of my new idea:
Basically my idea is to set-up a wiki-type site where users could add and edit content about helpful information that can be used towards a professional goal. I would do my best to make the site look the least like wikipedia as possible because I would want it to have its own original layout which I would accomplish by hiring a web designer. But the site would essentially have similar functions as wikipedia.
The site would offer information on different occupations and life paths that require more knowledge to get started than the average job. Each “occupation†page would have different sub-sections such as the occupational description, how-to begin, boot-strapping tips, famous professionals, resources, inspirational quotes that pertain to that profession and others.
My goal is to build a site that gives resources to people who have what society believes are impractical goals, even if this site just takes already written material on the web and brings it to one place.
I haven’t been able to find a site like this and for the first time I really don’t know how I would make money from the venture. The business model would probably include advertising as its primary revenue.
