Morality of profiting through non-profits

Speaking from a strictly "moral" perspective if you donate money to a charity then you really shouldnt take it as a tax writeoff.

That is an excellent point. Truely "doing good" should not have ulterior motives. That doesn't mean something isn't moral or ethical if you earn a profit from it, but the point is to be honest about what you are doing. If your goal is to make a profit and give back to your community, great. Just don't lie about it (and I'm not saying you are) under they guise of pure charity if it really isn't that.

That said, that doesn't mean that "non-profits" don't do this. I know someone who worked for one of these organizations who was paid 50% of any donation she was able to acquire. 50%! How is this really a charity if this much is being paid out to all of the staff. My grandfather once told me that he was aware of quite a few not-for-profits that keep 90% of the donations for payouts to managers and staff and only disburse 10%. Seems a bit hypocritical and greedy for a "charitable organization" don't you think?
