I was researching "diseases of affluence".
These include diabetes, heart disease, depression and many others.
About 80% are caused mainly by a bad diet, excessive consumption and little exercise. The remaining 20% causation-factor seems to be stress level and other aspects of lifestyle.
So, given that a person manages their physical health well, they should be able to handle 5x the stress that an unhealthy person can...
Some people have faith, and they feel a purpose in life, and for this reason they can endure almost anything. It makes stress more bearable.
Now let's say we maintain good physical health, and we have faith and purpose in life, maybe also a supportive family/community, then what are the mental limits that remain?
I think cognitive overload is one. When all time is spent on complex decisions and you lack focus.
It's why many say singular focus on one goal is most crucial to accomplish things. This reduces stress and allows us to think.
But is life interesting then? A life of no fun or variety is in itself quite stressful. Like you are missing out on being alive at your full capacity.
At this point, you will say there are different lifestyles, like minimalism (live like a monk with few possessions and have inner peace), or balance (work hard on chosen goals, then go on vacation and enjoy it), or maximalism (work hard, party hard, collect all the experiences, people, things, accolades, because you can, should or want to)
And you may claim one philosophy is better than the other, or that is depends on your personality. But what if where you are on this spectrum of "minimalist / balance / maximalist" is not a conscious choice at all, just a reflection of your cognitive load? As in, your mental capacity and stress tolerance?
A common cause of stress is fear. And fears can be overcome through exposure training or negative visualization.
If so, are minimalists (or people satisfied with little) mistaken in the belief that they are making a conscious choice?
Are we always operating near our stress ceiling? How do we raise it?
