Intellectual Property and the Internet

Robert Kiyosaki in his many books always speaks about the importance of protecting one’s work from copycats and the intellectual lazy herd. He himself mentions his surfer-wallet company that went bust in less than 6 months after reaching the tops because he failed to file the proper patents and copyrights.

Now I understand this can be done with books, inventions and such, but can this concept of intellectual property be applied to the Internet? How can someone patent an Internet Service for instance? What about worldwide competition? Can ideas be protected? And really why should they?

Do you think the following example is an application of my question: “Friendster came up with a genius invention, which was quickly copied by Myspace and Facebook”
