The ‘I have a Dream’ foundation was launched in 1981, by businessman Eugene Lang, to reduce the drop out rate of the school children and to empower the children in low-income communities to achieve higher education. The foundation is well supported in its initiatives by corporations across the world. Among the organizations supporting the foundation in its efforts is the Deep South Insurance services.
In February 2002, the employees of Deep South Insurance services adopted 19 underprivileged children from the Foundation. In addition to providing a $5,000 grant to I Have a Dream, David Disiere opened his 3,000-acre Cedar Bluff Ranch for a weekend to all 19 ‘Dreamers’. All the 19 children, ranging in age from 12 to 16, found their first opportunity to experience life away from the inner city on a real working ranch during the weekend. The whole event was focused at sharing new experiences, tying business together with the need for formal education, and to keep an eye on high school graduation.
The children toured the barns as they marveled at the wonders of ranching business and selling of cattle, breeding, reproduction, and life expectancy. They also had a lot of fun playing together and competing with each other. The children participated in horseback riding, sack races, water balloon, egg throwing contests, tug-o'-war and horseshoes. All the activities were geared toward individual and team competitions. The CEO of Deep South, David Disiere made a firm commitment to each student that he would track his/her progress and help fund his/her college education. The event was well received by the children and is sure to remain etched in their minds for many years to come.
