I'm in the book because a lot of the examples he uses seem to be my life as I've lived a "normal" life. I always new from the time I was only in elementary school I wanted to live life in the fast lane but I lost my way.
I started out when I was ten by saving everything I'd get from christmas money to baptism money. I bought my first snowcone machine in elementary school, not just cause I liked snowcones but I sold snowcones at the little league games behind my house. The way I was raised I thought I needed to live life in the slowlane, except my line of thinking was this could take a while so I need to start extremely early.
When I was in the 7th grade I put money into my first mutual fund, definitely slowlane mentality. When I was in 8th grade I had my mother open up an ameritrade account so I could by stocks and invest my money, because I thought this was the best way to passive income. I wanted to make my money in stocks and invest in real estate.
I never wanted a job as a career I would work for myself. The problem the slowlane didn't fulfill my expectations, I didn't make money as quick as I thought. I saw some gains but not astronomical millionaire gains.
I started working jobs when i was 14 so I would have money and started saving and spent some of it. I started working valet the summer after I turned 16 becuase that was the best paying job a student could find. $8 an hour plus tips and after a week I figured out I could make a whole lot of overtime as well.
At 16 I was making $2000 a month before tips even factored in over that summer and during the school year I would work 3 12 hour shifts sometimes up to 18 hour shifts. This is when I began to lose sight of the goal. I was piling up the money but that's how I thought you'd pile it up and once you had enough you'd invest in stocks and real estate.
Again it didn't work out and during this time I picked up a nasty habit of playing online poker. I saw all the money being won on TV and all the posting on the forums and decided this is the best and easiest way to make it rich, I found out it was worse than the stock market.
When I went to college I had no intention of finishing, even though I did well in high school and entered a top college. I didn't like school and saw no point to it, as I never wanted that Job everyone seeks. I went because I figured It would be fun and it was, but thats when i seriously started to blow the money I had saved.
It really hit me hard because everyone there was going to school to get a job and reality kicked in that I was headed down the path to do the same. I got scared and I thought well if I cant be rich I have money I damn well can live rich.
I had financial aid paying for my classes which I rarely attended, and I lived life on the sidewalk hoping I would strike it rich and partying all my money away. It was some Damn poor decision making, after a year of college and 10k dollars in student loans with no working car, I didn't really want to go back, but I did cause that's what all my friends were doing and my parents thought I should. I didn't want to cause I knew the destruction it had caused me to live on the sidewalk, over the summer I did fine living the slowlane.
After the fall quarter again I reluctantly went back but crashed and burned after three weeks. Subconsciously i didn't believe college was the path to a job I wanted a life I wanted. I saw college as college was explained to me "learn by doing" so we can be of more value to employers. Our schools motto. We are better graduates and employees because we learn by doing so our intrinsic value is higher a slowlaners prospective.
I left school and took a year off. The whole year off I was under social pressure to figure out what career I was going to have and how I was going to get into college to achieve it. After a year of taking a college class working valet, searching for ideas, taking a few telesales jobs, one at a phonebank one at a corporation I realized I only really have 3 choices.
I could get a sales job or blue collar job that didn't require to many hours and not have much money but had the free time I desired. One thing I realized is I need to go back to school to become educated not just raise my intrinsic value leaving me with my second choice become a lawyer. I would do this because then I could make the millions possible as an agent or representing high profile clients.
The third choice is to start my own business and while reading this book I learned I need to get in the fast lane. I realized over the summer I took a history class at a college because of a girl, I told her I needed it to, when in reality I'm still not sure even to get a degree if it's needed but it made me realize I'm pretty good at school after actually having perfect attendance in the first time in my life. Now I take classes part time not to get my degree but because I enjoy learning and when taking them for the right reasons they are helpful and enjoyable.
Wow that was a long story but I felt I had to get it down on paper just so I can begin to head in the right direction. I'm in the East SF Bay Area and joined so I can be around fellow entrepreneurs and fastlaners. I joined right after reading the chapter on we must be around like minded people for a better tailwind. I'm letting you know I'm not on the sidewalk or the slow lane anymore. In writing this I am committing to the fast lane and committing to my businesses and business ideas.
