First Thread - Intellectual Property

I've been a lurker for a while here after finishing the book. Replied to a few topics and found a good deal of useful information. I realize this is a question best put to a lawyer but before I go down that route (and incur associated fees) I'd like your input.

I work for a large Aerospace tech firm and was involved with the design of an CRM app used internally. This app is not revenue producing and is purely internal-facing. Customers do not know it exists and there is no plan/reason to ever make it available to customers. It is unrelated to any of the revenue producing products the company manufacturers. There is no copyright or patent.

I've done a bunch of research and it appears that something similar is not currently available elsewhere. I would like to start from scratch and build my own app to market to other companies. The app would contain only one feature/function that is the same as the one used by my firm.

I do understand issues of intellectual property but I'm not sure this qualifies. I expect most responses will be "talk to a lawyer."
