They were being overly dramatic, so I reciprocated in kind.

It's a great business lesson in being reliable and having a great product. People are so enamored with Facebook that they view it as a LITERAL EMERGENCY, when it crashes for only 1 hour. Can you imagine having a product or service that has that kind of magnitude? It's awesome.

Exactly. Wow. Companies like Facebook blow my mind. When you can build a company where your customers call 911 b/c your site is down or there are riots in the streets because you add a Newsfeed on your site (happened in 2005-06 and it was then "they knew"), you might be on to something.

Polly Mosendz over at the Wire ran the numbers, and concluded that Facebook, based on its second quarter revenue numbers, pulls in around $22,453 every minute. It was down for a total of 19 minutes today, so the company lost around $426,607 today

The nature of the internet is that its all kinds of servers and computers linked. I don't think its possible for it to go down over the whole world at once. If it does happen its likely noone will be left to know if its working or not

It would be easy to take out Russia or China. I think they each only have 2 root servers? Since they monitor and sensor traffic heavily. (Not that any other country doesn't monitor traffic.)

It would be far easier to attack the DNS data running between root servers and corrupt it physically. I read a lengthy paper on this theory once. I wish I could find it.
