I really don't see what they see in Instagram that gives it a billion dollar value. Personally, I think it's a highly over-rated service and I don't see where they can get that sort of return out of it. Maybe this is just to counter Google's acquisition of Picnik?

I don't see what gives it a billion dollar value also even though they gained 1 million new users with their Android release, but at the same time Millenial Media's IPO shot up over $8 on the first day of trading I believe. Right now, anything that is social or mobile is being valued EXTREMELY high.

Well they just finished a funding round, $50million at $500million valuation, so someone just gained a few bucks with this (Sequoia and the gang...)
Also it's cash and stock(hmm, IPO is around the corner...).
My guess was that Facebook didn't want Google to get all that traffic... Maybe they had a bidding war going on...

They gained 5million users and yes mobile+social and they are throwing money(bubble anyone?)...
