European distribution of US product

I recently ordered a product from a kickstarter project. It was delivered from the US to Europe and I had to pay a rather high customs charge.

When I got in touch with the founder I told him it would be better for him to have a European distributor to avoid these high customs charges (not even sure if that would help). If I want I can distribute his product in Europe.

Are there any threads about this on the forum or somewhere else?

I'm looking for advice on how to distribute US products in Europe and how to do it successfully.
