Tony Davis confesses he didn’t know a thing about jewelry when he decided to launch on an online website to sell personalized designs. The Thornhill software engineer-turned-venture capitalist figured there had to a way to modernize the jewelry business. He was convinced shoppers would happily use the Internet to buy everything from rings to charms, complete with engraved messages.
“We’re taking an old industry, coupled it with technology to come up with a new way of doing things,” said Davis, who doesn’t wear any jewelry, not even a wedding band.
“You don’t get to touch it (as you would in a store), but you touch it at your home when it’s delivered.”
Calling his e-commerce site Jewlr.com, dropping the “e” like Internet-related companies from Flickr to Tumblr, Davis started the company in late fall of 2009, managing to ring up just 300 sales that season. It receives that many orders in a half a day now.
