In his teens, Don Hankey spent some of his days laboring at his family’s partly-owned Ford dealership in downtown Los Angeles. A high school senior on his way to the University of Southern California, Hankey was a lot boy at the Koreatown dealership, answering to car salesmen and executives who needed him to wash cars or run errands.
Now 69, Hankey takes order from no one. Since taking over that Ford car lot in the mid-1970s, the Angeleno has built an automobile services empire known as the Hankey Group, which derives most of its income through billion-dollar subprime auto lender, Westlake Financial Services. FORBES estimates that Hankey, who serves as chairman of the eponymous parent company, is worth $1.6 billion.
