I know everyone and every book out there tells you to only use .com domain names, but it's getting very hard to find useable .com domain names for reasonable prices.

What are people's thoughts on the .co extension? Large companies like Overstock, which is rebranding as O.co, and Twitter (t.co domain shortener) are starting to us the .co extension. Should I stay clear of .co and any other shortener and stick with a .com?

I'm of the minority opinion on the forum, but I think .co is going to grow in the next few years. I bought a few .co's cheaply, where as their .com counterparts would have cost thousands of dollars. It's really unknown as to whether or not people will embrace .co, but I tend to think it have some success.

Just wanted to bump this to get some more feedback.

Some domains I like for a business name have .net, .co, etc, available, but .com is sold, but not in use.

-Side question. If I use a .net domain name, would I have to file a trademark to be able to stop someone from using the .com domain?

Thanks.
