I'm reading multiple real estate books right now and I've developed different feelings. One book I'm reading is about sticking to the basics and accumulating single family and small multi-family homes. The author encourages the reader to invest in what they are good at and accumulate their long term wealth. It didn't sound very fastlane.
I'm about half way done with "2 years to a million" and the authors talks about buying his first condo to a handful of apartment buildings and then moving up to the "big leagues" and buying large apartment complexes. This definitely seems more fastlane. He literally accumulated a million dollars worth of real estate in two years and he probably could have done more if he knew the knowledge that is available to so many investors today.
So this got me thinking, does everyone wish to own Donald Trump size skyscrapers? I personally have dreamt of having my start in tri's and quads and then going to NYU for real estate and then buying big time real estate in New York City. Is this the thinking that successful investors also had? Is it reasonable to assume one can be succeed in small apartment buildings and carry that success over to big time commercial real estate?
