Losing North Africa, Philippines, and having the Japanese invade Alaska via the Aleutian Islands didn't help. Plus the Germans had there last big victory and offensive on the Eastern front with Army Group South's push into the Crimea and Stalingrad. 42 was also known as the good times for the U boats as they sunk our shipping left and right...sometimes in plain view of people on the beach.
