Greetings!
I wanted to post an introduction before getting stuck into the rest of the forum. I'm very much looking forward to meeting everyone else here and continuing down this path of taking control, making money and gaining freedom.
I'm turning 30 this year and have been working a 9-5 job for the past four years. At the time, I couldn't believe my luck: I trained as a classical musician my entire life, came to San Francisco from England to complete a masters degree in performance (I admit, there was also a girl involved at the time...) and following a year of practical training that the US immigration offers post-graduation, I fell into a job working for a communications company that successfully sponsored me for my work visa.
It was all rosy for a while, earning money for the first time in my life, paying off debts, having fun, meeting new people and learning new ropes in an amazing country. But before long, the usual restraints of a 9-5 office job started wearing away at my soul and general happiness. Don't get me wrong, I was and remain hugely grateful to have had a business invest in me and fight against the odds to keep me here, but the novelty factor has worn off for me and reality has set in. This simply is not a life I wish to lead. But most of all, I hate the lack of freedom, the relatively paltry returns in exchange for the amount of time that one must commit to a job of this nature, and the inability to pursue a whole host of other dreams and projects.
I now know, without a doubt, that 9-5 is not for me. I also know that performing music as a CAREER is not for me. Music is my passion and one that has driven me to create a new concert series here in San Francisco but that is something that I would rather be spending my time on as a passion, not a money maker (which it isn't...!).
I'm not yet sure what my new path will look like, especially as an Englishman living in the United States, but the fact that I do not know is not a reason to sit back and let my current reality dictate...this drives me to find out and explore and it drives me find any way possible to embark on this journey. And it feels great! The negative aspects of my current situation are only temporary and they themselves provide this spark of taking control of my life and future.
Thanks for taking the time to read this through! Looking forward!
Cheers,
Andur
