Found this gem via the subreddit nottheonion. And, sure, it's a true story even The Onion couldn't write:

A Long Island high school football coach got the axe for one game after his team thrashed another high school 61-13... because his team's performance violates the local county's "lopsided scores policy".

Under the rule, coaches have to explain their winning margin to a committee if it exceeds more than 42 points. And the point of this "lopsided scores policy"? To prevent better teams from running up on lesser ones, and promote sportsmanship and dignity ".

Apparently sportsmanship now means everyone must earn a trophy!

Luckily, the local superintendent for the winning high school's district is with the coach and labelled the punishment "unjustified".

"Who said they are experts on sportsmanship?" he asked in a public letter. "Who appointed these people to run this kangaroo court, being the judge, jury and executioners?"

But... the county's commissioner of high school football defends the policy in the New York Times:

Institutionalising mediocrity.

The message is "try, but don't you dare be too good".

The body building world had something similar, when a competitor was not allowed to compete... because he had won too many competitions.

Gotta protect them from getting their feelings hurt... it might make them reevaluate their priorities in life. That would be not warm and fuzzy. Can’t have that in the bonobo masturbation society.
