For the longest time I've wanted to break away from the norm. Something has never felt right about working 5 days a week at usually more than 40 hours, for those couple of days off and several weeks per year.
When I was in highschool, I was always looking for something to resell. For the longest time I sold softdrinks from my locker and 2 other lockers that I rented from other kids. I had the standard Pepsi range at the cheapest price point, Cokes for a bit more, and then specialised drinks (irn bru, energy drinks etc.) at the highest price point. I'd stock up when the supermarkets had sales to increase my margins and only took cash.
It was great! However, that ended when some kids tried to break into my locker (but got the wrong one), and teachers became aware of what I was doing. I got a slap on the wrist but I never went back to it.
Since then, I've gone into corporate and make a decent living, but I work more than I need to and the work lacks fulfilment. I've read Man's Search for Meaning and Solve for Happy, and I understand you make meaning from what you do, but it really feels like an endless slave race to make others a lot more money. My job impacts people and makes their lives easier, but still, I know there's more out there!
I've always tried to convince my long-term girlfriend of breaking away from the norm but she's always been hesitant, but this year has been the hardest for us work wise. We've had our FTEs and it feels like every second day we're talking about what we can do, and gaps here and gaps there. Talking is one thing, but now we have to act!
I'm about 15% of the way into The Great Rat Race Escape , but this forum is so full of value, and I really hope I can help others too.
