Wow! You just described my current week! Have you been watching me?

I did get a bonus with it is well, but that just sets the hook deeper.

Don't let it reel you in dude. I once had a boss give me a 5k bonus, then the very next week throw my a$$ under the bus. He used to buddy up to me asking about when are you gonna buy a house, when are you gonna have a kid, etc. Like that dickbag cared. The guys that owned the company basically were just uncomfortable with the fact that I didn't have some huge nut I had to make every month.

When you have all kinds of obligations, they know you'll take whatever shit they throw at you just to keep that paycheck coming.

People without huge monthly obligations make the WORST employees.

I won't lie, I kinda like it when my employees go buy cars and houses or make babies or whatever...I know they'll show up tomorrow.

Gotta keep the human resource wheel turning...

I love it when my tenants buy a new car/truck, they're not saving to buy a house and move. Time to raise the rent a little.. :)

At the risk of making myself sound like one of those d-bag employers everyone complains about...

I give big raises and bonuses too.

Why?

1) to reward those who do well

2) so they spend it and further rely on the job's income (their expenses go up to match their pay...or worse)

This keeps them around because they can't quit or take a job that pays less elsewhere. (golden handcuffs)

I pay at least 50% higher than comparable jobs, in some areas I pay double. I have super low turnover because of it. But I don't have low turnover because I pay well, I have low turnover because my employee's are CONSUMERS at heart.

So...

The way around that is by doing exactly what you did. You keep the job for the extra income, the extra security, and any bonus you got is nice to have. But if you lost the job, you wouldn't be scrambling to make your payments like 99% of my employees would be.

Yeah, that's why I want to give it a year. We will be long out of the forest by then. I am just struggling with the mental aspect of not really needing my employer at this point. Its an unusual feeling......since I have ALWAYS depended on that paycheck to make ends meet.
I think sometimes you need to burn your bridges so you survive or d I even trying.

I think this is why my landlord didn't give me crap about keeping chickens in my backyard. Chicken coop + more animals means I'm getting comfortable in this rental, haha. Hope he doesn't raise the rent.... ;)

I'm not in the "burn your bridges" "sink or swim" line of thinking unless you are single with no dependents.

The OP has 5 kids...

It's nice when you're on the employer side of things haha.

Not so much if you're the employee and you live the slowlane or sidewalk lifestyle.

The employees with low expenses or side work that produces income for them are much more concerned over "time" than they are "pay"...which is bad for me.

Some people actually value their freedom...go figure.

Don't let it reel you in dude.

A little over 3 years ago my boss gave me 400 shares of restricted stock (3 years until it vested). At the time, I was at a point where I was ready to walk, and he knew it, so he he dangled the carrot and like the a$$ that I was, I bit. 3 years later, I'm still here, but the difference now is that I found the resources (the book and this community) to plan my escape. If I knew then what I know now, I would have realized that I could have easily earned the value of those shares with a little hustle and perhaps built something that would have allowed for an earlier escape.

And this is why my principal asked me to resign before the end of last school year, haha.

I was too busy on my "side work" to deal with the school's bullshit.

I was last to arrive, and first to leave, each day.

I would never want to hire an employee like me.

Yeppp.....exactly. Plus, it is a good gig and I have a great group of folks that I work with. Burning a bridge down is not something that I would want to fondly remember. It would be a bitter sweet departure, for that reason. I would love to walk off with both middle fingers up, but that's unlikely to happen.

The incident in Texas is really what put me on my trajectory, and that course can't be altered, even by a decent job/employer. And I'm sure everyone will understand when the time comes. In the mean time, my bank account is growing by leaps and bounds. LOVING IT !!

Haha, my employer is always asking me when I'm getting married, and other similar questions...good to know what's on their mind. Of course, they don't know I started a business yet.

When the president of the company found out I had bought a duplex and was living in one side of it, he actually said, "I like it! What I like most about it is that it means you'll be sticking around for a while!"...talk about misinterpreting signals

I guess the economics of indentured servitude look different if you're on the other side of it :)

For me, ironically, it had the opposite effect. I don't know if I would ever have quit my job if my wife hadn't gotten pregnant. My employer was shocked: "You can't quit, you're about to have a baby,... that's crazy, etc etc."

It was the soul searching of realizing I was about to be a father that made me realize that I didn't want how I was living my life to be the example my son saw. My son will be fine if he has to go without the newest game console or a big tv or some other such bullshit. He'll be fine without it. I don't want him to see me set an example of trading time and dignity for temporary comfort and a false sense of security. That would eff him up for life.

Clearly, those same life events have almost opposite effects on many people, though. I'm not sure why. I just don't want my kid to see me living like a lazy wusscake.

I'm exactly like you at this moment, my "fastlane journey" is far from being enough from being sufficient to leave my job, but i live at my parents house still and i gathered quite a bit over the last 2 years working, so i don't have many expenses and could definitely leave my job and focus only the business part.

But i don't think i'm still at my full potencial, i'm not fully dedicated to my business on the free time i have, so i say to myself i don't deserve that extra freedom until i give my best at my business, health and relationship.

If i can do that while working, then i know i will be ready to leave my job and be successful at life, because if i could do all that while working, i can manage even better when i have more time in my hands.
