I've never created a public progress thread before and even though it feels a little bit scary (being vulnerable and open to criticism), I decided to do it here. Frankly I can't imagine a better place than this forum since the book spoke to me like anything else and I enjoy being around people with similar mindset and goal.

My goal with this thread is to
  1. feel the pressure from public commitment and therefore move faster
  2. document my journey
  3. make it available for others to see what's worked and what hasn't
  4. get feedback from other members with different perspectives
Therefore any feedback or constructive criticism is welcomed.

So far I've picked a topic that I want to dive in (personal development/productivity), identified the target audience (employed men 25-35 trying to create a side business) and their pain points (lack of time, energy and/or motivation to work on their side business).

The website is up with an email opt-in and a downloadable content addressing their pain points. Since getting people on my email list is my main goal, my actions will be aligned with this goal. Techniques like SEO, PPC/PPV, article marketing etc. aren't the way I want to go right now (but will happily use PPC when a product is out and generates a revenue), therefore building relationships with other bloggers with similar audience in order to be able to guest post on their sites will be my target for this week (and the following ones, of course).

Apart from contacting bloggers I want to create another article and publish it on my website and promote it on relevant places.

What online courses on building a side business do you know? I've found B-school, Earn1k, Zero to launch, Location Rebel. Are there any others that I missed? If so, please share.

Looking forward to reading about your progress!

What's the reason behind your choice not to use PPC? I personally have never used it with a product, but judging form others' experiences it seems to be the easiest way to access the "scale" portion of the CENTS framework. You can't really scale a product well with purely guest blogging, unless you know dozens of popular bloggers. Not trying to discourage you, just curious why you're taking that path.

I don't want to use it at this moment while starting with the blog and creating some audience. When a product is launched and I have some revenue, I happily jump on PPC and scale, that's for sure :) I'll edit my first post to make it clear.

Ahoj!

You might want to look for 10StepsTo10K. Free ebook, about 120pages.

Also, after reading thread title I thought this article might be useful to you:

I break weekly goals into small tasks, so here it goes for this week:
  • come up with a topic for another article
  • create a mindmap for that article
  • create a concept of that article
  • create a downloadable content
  • rewrite/polish and publish the article
  • find at least 3 other relevant places that can be used for promotion of that article
  • find at least 5 relevant bloggers
  • find and pick a remarkable post that can be mentioned in the email outreach
  • create emails that provide value and contact the bloggers
  • research Dwight's recommendation (or any other that comes up)

Great initiative
I will follow the thread.

The personal development is very crowded. It is a good sign because the demand is huge.
I like more practical stuff. I think hats the way to go.
Teach steps with practical and real examples hat works.
Cheers

The best person on the field I know is James Clear. Google him. If haven't already.

Ok, wanted to give an update on what's done:

  • come up with a topic for another article
  • create a mindmap for that article
  • create a concept of that article
  • create a downloadable content (wasn't needed, because the topic of the article matches the content I've already created)
  • rewrite/polish and publish the article
  • find at least 3 other relevant places that can be used for promotion of that article
  • find at least 5 relevant bloggers (4 done, 1 more to go)
  • find and pick a remarkable post that can be mentioned in the email outreach
  • create emails that provide value and contact the bloggers
  • research Dwight's recommendation (or any other that comes up)
Contacting bloggers is more time demanding than I thought (around 2 hours per blogger). Surprisingly I found it hard to do. Fear of rejection and fear of imperfection took place. Fortunately not for long, because I realized that
  1. if I fear rejection and don't contact any blogger, then I have no chance to partner up for a guest post. If I on the other hand risk my chances and contact bloggers, I might end up guest posting somewhere. Definitely a win to reach out!
  2. if I sent a bad email, the world wouldn't end and the blogger wouldn't ban me for life :) If I mess up the email, I can retry a week or two later with a different approach, because the blogger wouldn't probably remember me. And if he/she does, that would just show I'm persistent :)
Next steps:
  • contact the last blogger
  • pick other 5 bloggers and start reaching out
  • create and add an image to my email optin
  • visually break articles (sub headlines, images) to make them more appealing
  • create a system that would force me to become active on 2 relevant forums on a daily basis
  • modify flow of email subscription
  • create another email optin for a/b testing

I'll be sharing what's worked for me, so mainly real examples.

Yes, he's already on my list :)
