Ebola in the USA... Anyone Concerned?

On a side note, just a thought I wanted to add for medical professionals who actually may need to wear a hazmat, (which hopefully it'll never get to that point - but some fyi anyway) from experience, you are going to sweat really bad and it will be dripping. So if you wear glasses, sweat will obstruct your vision from dripping on them AND they will repeatedly slide down and out of position... so, you're definitely going to want to band them to your melon and vented prescription goggles would be best.

Anyone ever see that movie bubble boy w/ Travolta? Wouldn't that be a better solution where patients could be cared for while being contained within???

Someone saying "it totally works" is not exactly FDA approval, but the guy gets points for taking action.

"Entrepreneur Todd Spinelli has made over $480,000 selling “Ebola-C,” a wafer that claims to boost one’s immune system by providing 554% of the daily recommended amount of Vitamin C. The product hasn’t been approved by the FDA, but Spinelli claims that a doctor on his staff says it totally works. So far, Spinelli’s sold 14,000 units for $34.95 each"

The Belizean's government response to the potential threat has been 1st world. The United States'? Third world.

While rumours ran wild in social media earlier on Thursday night, the government release made clear that “out of an abundance of caution, the Government of Belize decided not to facilitate a US request for assistance in evacuating the passenger through the Philip Goldson International Airport.”

Basically Belize to the USA: "F*ck you -- you aren't porting and coming to shore"

As someone who just spent 8 hours sleeping in that airport, I am thankful for their prudence.

A cruise ship is the absolute LAST place you would want a deadly virus. There's one called the norovirus (not deadly), that is nicknamed "the cruise ship virus." I got it on my last cruise in May and it made the last 2-3 days miserable. I'm like 90% sure it was from the escargot, which means it's on raw food from poor food handling. That's pretty significant considering a ton of people order those appetizers such as sushi samplers, escargot, etc.

I have had the norovirus twice last year, the first time my son got it and gave it to us. It may or may not have been in the food, the norovirus is highly contagious so in reality you could have gotten it any number of ways if several people on the ship had it.

It took my entire family down one day so we had a friend over to help with my son since he was recovering, then the help got it as well. It is not fun to have at all.

Yeah you're right. It could have been from anything. I guess I was alarmed a while ago when I was researching it.. I came across this:

As far as norovirus cases attributable to contaminated food, the CDC points the finger directly at ill cooks and waiters. The CDC reports that restaurant workers account for 70% of norovirus cases involving contaminated food. The CDC says:
  • 1 in 5 food service workers report working while sick with vomiting and diarrhea. Fear of job loss and leaving coworkers short staffed were significant factors in their decision.
  • Food service workers practice proper hand washing only 1 of 4 times.
The CDC suggests that one way to deal with the problem is "requiring sick food workers to stay home, and considering use of paid sick leave and on-call staffing, to support compliance." A CDC spokesperson say that "we really need to call upon the food service industry to work with public health to help foster an environment where food handlers can stay home when they're sick."
Of course this is impossible on a cruise ship where galley workers live on the ship and have cabin mates who live in close quarters.
Many of the food workers on cruise ships, like waiters and assistant waiters, earn a basic salary of only $50 a month and depend on tips from the customers. Missing a week because they are sick with noro would result in significant loss of money for these cruise waiters and assistants. Many galley workers keep working while sick.

Its Friday afternoon, early evening depending on your location... pay attention to whatever information seems to come out during this time frame. It's usually selectively released as it marks the end of a news cycle and tends to get downplayed/ignored.

Well I live in Dallas so that kinda sucks. lol the wife and I are going to go up to Minnesota and stay with my sister if it gets bad. But, business as usual until then. :)

The air is great in Minnesota. In another month or so, it will be so F*cking cold that the viruses can't survive. They freeze. Same reason we have no snakes, spiders, or Arizonans.

I fear the conversation is getting off-track.

Also, I understand the mods have this handy-dandy new power to ban people from specific threads. Lest I see that power in action firsthand, I'll refrain from responding and classify this under "agree to disagree."

ChickenHawk glances around the darkened corridor. "I've probably said too much already," she says in a hushed tone.

Interesting that the nurse Nina Pham has been downgraded from Good to Fair and that it's reporting can't be disclosed due to privacy laws. Me not believe.

Well now things are starting to get real where I live.

I live 2 counties away from the whole massacre in Akron/Kent Ohio that CNN is covering, I live right on the Ohio/PA border and people are starting to panic because now it was just recently stated that 3 people who were on the flight with the Vinsan lady are currently in Texas but are from my neck of the woods, like literally within a half hour of me and are being monitored for symptoms but, they are being allowed to come back home.

Their exact hometowns are not being disclosed but it is being said locally that they are from our local communities.

Local hospitals 10 minutes away from me have been notified that these people may arrive with Ebola and to be prepared.

These hospitals are currently communicating with the CDC on what's best to do.

This is not being reported on the news. I found out because my aunt is employed at one of the hospitals and is panicking.

They know who was on that plane. Instead of having people go to the hospital, can't they tell them to stay in an isolated place (house?) until someone go get 'em? I don't understand the whole "if you don't feel well, come to the hospital" thing.

There is nobody outside of the administration that knows exactly the full extent of what is going on. There is only one thing that is certain... the American people are not being told the full story here.

Want to know how well prepared nurses and hospitals are for Ebola?
Read this statement from nurses at Texas Presbyterian Hospital

http://www.nationalnursesunited.org...at-texas-health-presbyterian-hospital-in-dal/

The CDC and Obama dropped the ball on this whole situation.. BIG TIME. There should have been a ban of travelers with a passport stamp from West Africa in the last 6-12 months and a quarantine of everyone who has been in contact in any way with an Ebola patient or the body fluids. (but no... they get to fly and take cruises)

They may be able to treat 2 or 3 patients at Emory. But if it becomes 10 or 20 or 100, the whole system will be completely overwhelmed.

"The US is not going to want to declare an Ebola epidemic, because of the economic implications. Some actuarial firm has probably run the numbers and determined which demands a greater payout: X number of dead or shutting down a flight."

Scary thought.

Zero spread of the disease from their imported case, and quick and efficient monitoring of anyone and everyone that may have been in contact with the individual. Better system in place than Texas apparently :p
Ah yes. But unlike Texas, Senegal is allowed to control its own borders. IMO, Texas isn't the problem here.

I was only kidding..

However, I'm not talking about closing borders or anything like that. The exact same thing happened in Senegal and Texas, where the patient showed up then started exhibiting symptoms.

In this instance, Duncan is the only individual that has brought it into the USA, so closed borders or not, the situation is currently identical.

Texas Presbyterian is where the problems (ie multiple secondary infections) occurred. Who you choose to blame for that doesn't really matter, but it's a fact.

It's true that the hospital could have definitely handled it better. But over the last few months, we've all had it drilled into us that Ebola wouldn't arrive in the U.S.A. And even if it did, don't worry, be happy, because Ebola is super hard to catch. (A quick read through this very thread is a good illustration of this.) The nurses and hospital were following CDC protocols, which are similar to those for AIDS. And as it turned out, those protocols were shit.

Plus, the guy didn't bother to tell anyone until his second hospital visit that he'd handled a dying Ebola victim. Right from the start, this was a disaster waiting to happen. Sadly, I predict it gets worse before it gets better, moreso if we keep flying in people from the hot zone.

Yeah - I am not really understanding the US response to this at all. British Airways and Air France immediately cancelled flights to the affected areas, but Delta is still trucking them around? Even from a commercial standpoint I can't imagine the risk for PR and aircraft decontamination is worth the revenue they are maybe making on those flights.

That being said, it is quite difficult to contract Ebola, but who is to say the virus doesn't mutate and we are caught way behind the eight ball on this?

Ugh, as happens more often then we would like, The US has handled this situation with the intelligence of a small village in bumfuck Kazakhstan. The thing is, I doubt that a collection of high ranking people are all this stupid. There is ulterior motives here as there usually are. Safety of the population is not near the top of these peoples list.

Good for Belize.

Ebola is super hard to catch.

I would argue this is still the case. 70 or so support staff interacted with him when he was most infectious in hospital, and 2 people got it.

Not to mention all of the people he came into contact with before that who were completely unprotected, and nobody has it.

In Spain, only 1 nurse was infected, and as of yet nobody in the general population is showing symptoms.

Need to keep things in perspective.

Also, if this and other potential diseases concern anyone here, in addition to storing supplies you can donate to organizations like Doctors Without Borders http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/ These people are doing amazing stuff and are some of the most effective defenses in the spread and management of these types of things. (note, that's the american site... if you're canadian go to the canadian site and you'll get your tax receipts. win-win)

I'm not just saying it, I became a monthly sponsor after learning about all the good they do in the world.

Let's keep the positive vibe going.

In all crisis, yes many people become even more selfish than they were previously.. but true selfless heroes emerge as well.

Yeah.. 2 people in what should have been a very safe and precautionary environment, in full protective gear. Granted they were dealing with a dying ebola patient, but if they got it, it's hard to believe anyone in the public would have much a chance of defending themselves around someone who has the disease.
