I am in the process of putting together a website for my business.

So, I go through some posts on here and there are quite a few recommendations for the Hostgator web hosting.

I check out their website and was satisfied that it would work at a price I could live with.

I go through their sign up and pay with paypal.

I start reading through their tutorial and all of a sudden I'm logged off. So I go to the account page and it states that there is a problem with my billing address and that I need to contact them.

I get an email saying that they want a photo id of myself to prove that my billing address is the same. (It is of course, I've filled out forms on the web before I think I know what I'm doing)

So I send them a very legible copy of my drivers license. They reply back stating it is not readable, could I send another. I reply back that I double checked to make sure the previous one was readable, but I obliged and sent yet another copy.

Then I get a email asking for me to send a photo of myself holding my drivers license next to my face!

Who do these people think they are?! TSA?!?!?!?!?

I have canceled my account with them and will continue my search for another web host.

I have also sworn to tell anyone who will listen how bad of an experience I have had with them.

This has been a rant. I feel a little bit better. You can continue your life now.

Not sure what to say. They have always been good for me. Maybe they are having trouble with spammers setting up new, fake, accounts?

Since I won't be using hostgator, what are some other ones that people here use and are happy with?

I have been using HostGator for many years. I started with a reseller account and now have a server with them. I really couldn't be happier. I think LiquidWeb is who MJ recommended in his book. Have you looked at them?

I browsed through their website briefly. I am making the website as more of a testing thing to see if I can do it and if it will work the way I want without having to do much more then that. I didn't really want to spend much, but I guess if liquidweb is good I shouldn't mind paying for it.

Is liquidweb easy to use? Browsing through the website I'm getting the feeling that I'm well out of the realm of simple and into the bowels of programming and such.

If you're looking for cheap, easy and realiable, I would go with JustHost. They also have cpanel and fantastico and they're really cheap; like around $46 for 6 months. The one problem with them is that they tend to spam you a lot with offers for other services which are just way to make more money off of you but if you can ignore that then you should be fine.

When you're ready to upgrade, I would go with eistuffgroup:eiStuff Group Custom Hosting Solutions. The guys there are super helpful. They will respond very fast to any emails that you send them for help; when it comes to customer service, you can't beat them, especially at that price range. I'm using them currently for my site.

I never had any issues with HostGetor either.

I think the issues is with PayPal. There are too many fraud transactions with PayPal. Why not use credit card?

  • I also use MidPhase.com, which is as good as HostGator.
  • HostingZoom is OK, but not good for scale up.
  • WebHostingPad.com is stable and very inexpensive, but don't use for production.

Don't use GoDaddy for database intense website (such as wordpress). Static HTML is perfectly on GoDaddy.

For hardcore developer, I do recommend to use the following VPS.
VPS.net
Slicehost.com
HostGator VPS

I was given the option of credit card or paypal. Since I had some cash in my paypal account I figured I'd use that. I would not have thought there would be a problem.

Hate to say it, but I also only clicked on this thread to voice my support for hostgator :p . Never had problems, 80% of the time their customer service is great.

It does sound like the problem was with Paypal(no surprise) rather than Hostgator.

I use liquidweb and they are amazing.

24/7 customer service & they will fix any problem. All their employees speak english and are very knowledgeable.

One time they deducted a few hundred bucks from my bank account. I called back and asked if they could send it back for 2 weeks until I could afford to pay them and they did.

5 stars for liquid web
