Quick questions, what are the downsides to implementing something as a saas product vs a product?

I'm currrently working out if an idea a have should be developed as a plugin for wordpress or as a saas solution.
Upside
  • Monthly money vs one time
  • Product always up to date, easier maintenance
Downsides
  • Might be a 'harder' sell
  • User must login on another platform to manage his stuff
  • Lack of branding (can be solved by supplying a plugin renderen custom html and css)
  • User management
What would be factors to use in your choice? Which value attributes do one have over the other?

Thanks in advance :)

You might want to consider a hybrid model or APIWare plugin.

Saas downsides is usally more expensive at the beginning since you need a wider array of roles covered , that you can safely decline in a plugin , you usally need to build multiple concurrent

Factors are is the load demand predominantly memory, disk access, disk space, processing power or avalabilty? Who are your target customers and what is the average website spend? If it is less than a $1000 A year,l you might struggle with the plugin

Do you need massive ability to scale from day one in case you land on the front page of reddit, or can you just use load balancers and put in a temporary limit on sign ups?

The technology decision should really be a back seat to the business use cases. What are your user stories? What problem are you looking to solve for whom with your product?
