I am thinking a lot lately about what people are complaining about: one does not learn the business and economical essentials to deal with the later adulescent problems like taxes, entrepreneurship and finances. We are complaining a lot but what could we actively change? What could we offer to benefit the wealth of our fellow humans? (Except of MJ's books of course ;)).

I like to relate here to the book the richest man in Babylon in which the king hired the richest man to teach the folk how to handle finance. I wonder how a present equivalent would look like. Any suggestions how to deal with this topic?

Media. Movies, TV Shows, Books that teach such things would go along way.

That's a HUGE topic.

The media has a lot to do with it. It influences the mindset of the "mindless", the ones who need to be lead. It's not a coincidence the media is tied to politics. However, every coin has two sides, and the media could influence positively. That would have the biggest impact, as it would influence the masses. Once the masses know your message, it occupies their minds, they are more receptive to it. So, when they see someone doing what the media message said, they wouldn't be like "oh, what a madman", but more like "shit, I am falling behind". So, you tap into the fear of missing out, and the herd mentality. I think this would be the fastest and most successful way at scale.

I would love to hear what you have to say, as it is something I take to heart.

Education is the best way, so Youtube, books and forums like these are a great place to start.

Well, I would not blame media perse. They just bring what people want to see. Competing against the run is hurting them. However, it is interesting ... I cannot remember any series dealing with financial planning as a whole. Well, when it is about pension, all the 50+ guys want to optimise and there are documentaries about it. But the audience should be 30 years younger to make a real impact.

Walk the talk is an option of course. To make an impact on people, they have to take interest in you. On the other hand, to push an opinion forward, you need credibility like showing that you have made it.

I had the luck of having economics already in high school, so I learned some stuff about money and of the fed/ecb stuff. But personal life planning was never in scope. I do not know whether I would have been even capable of planning anything at this point.

I had an idea of going to an nearby high school and offer a session of such a talk. Even if just one child got the right mindset afterwards, it would be a success.

Media serves as an escape. However, the narratives still shape the culture as well as reflect the culture.

It's like how people see the event but not the process. They don't want to hear that it's hard work. They don't want to hear about the failures, the pain.

To me the root of it all is why that is true.

People talk about famous basketball players like MJ and Kobe as if genetics and luck are why they're famous. They refuse to acknowledge that these players practiced 8+ hours a day for years upon years and put in plenty of hard work and sacrifice in other areas of life to achieve what they did.

Again, why.

Perhaps if they acknowledge that work is involved then they will feel responsible for their lack of success instead of being able to attribute to things in their control?

It seems like then it comes down to taking responsibility for one's life vs being a victim.

People who complain -> they don't want change
Generally, In order to change, the human mind becomes scary mode.
I think taking calculated risk something people can do instead of standing still IF They have desire to test or change something

A Business owner pays less taxes because he/she creates jobs including risks
A Worker pays more taxes because he/she doesn't take any risks

There are 7.5/8 Billion people in this world.
Now the Question: Do All 7.5 Billion people is meant for Entrepreneurship?
The Answer is: Nope

There is a saying: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink
Meaning: You can give someone the opportunity to do something, but you cannot force them to do it if they do not want to.

Mindset is important than anything else.
Some people are busy impressing other people like frosting the cake instead of taking care of mindset.
Demarco talks about Chess game analogy in his book. This is perfect.

Entrepreneurship is not for everyone, that's why it is so important to know yourself.
Finance is something you can learn & handle yourself by making mistake, college doesn't teach it neither in school
Tax: This is totally ignored since childhood - There should be at least a Introductory Tax 101 Course - something

We're talking centuries of indoctrination since at least the industrial revolution, and a school system based on that too. You're told businessmen are bad, greedy and fat. Look at all these college students preaching socialism...

I'd say (and I don't think it would suffice) if I had to name one solution that, since you teach by example, just like with girl empowerment, there has to be more representation/exposure of entrepreneurs and business people that are independent yet do good deeds, are good to their communities and don't F*ck anyone over like all media portrays to eventually eliminate the taboo/stigma associated with being on your own. Someone other than Bill Gates, you know. Also more attainable levels of business, small business owners that create jobs etc. THEN people can see with their eyes that they could be like them and maybe give it a try.

Magazine? Zine? Podcast? YouTube Channel w/interviews? That's all I got right now.

I think the obvious way to help change societies mindset is to start at the very socialization process. At our schools and homes.

There is nothing wrong with socialization. There's a problem when that socialization is intrinsically flawed and unquestioned.

Imagine being socialized fastlane principles ever since you where a kid. I think most peoples lives would be different. Or how to think on your feet as an entrepreneur.

Hell, our current system brainwashed everyone to think college is the holy grail of success. Despite the fact that our economy evolves so fast that system is quickly becoming obsolete. Some people even get very angry if you say something like that about college ironically showing just how closed minded and ignorant of basic economics they are.

So the common sense Inget here is to distribute relevant media and involve pupils directly in school.

Plus, it helps to be successful for the message's authority.

I think we are mixing up here a lot of things. For me, I see now overall these topics mentioned:

1. Economics and business dynamics
2. Private financial planning
3. Entrepreneurship
4. Education as a tool for success

Do I miss something?

Remember that game drug wars? Amazing game and so so simple and so so addictive. Weed prices have crashed! buy buy buy! Sell sell sell!
I would love love love a game where you start with €5000 and become a billionaire through buying/selling products, investments, playing the international tax game (with Up To Date International Rules and Regulations, and where you get banned from the game for weeks when busted for tax evasion :playful: Multiplayer would be also awesome!
Please someone make it!!!

I teach robotics labs at a local university. i take time during lab time to teach them 'how to negotiate your job offer'.

After class the other night, I asked if anyone wanted me to talk for 5 minutes on pre and post tax benefits. After 45 minutes, no one had left. They want to learn. No one teaches.

It is up to us. Teach a kid about money. Talk to people about finances and business.

They exist. They're not very exciting. It just becomes more of the same. Need some sort of story line and drama. Otherwise you feel like a robot.

That said, maybe you'd like Rise of Industry? It was fun for about 4 hours. I really enjoyed Tropico 4 earlier this year. Economy + Dictatorship = Fun

Fun at the moment is a luxury that I have to spend sitting gaming home alone haha.

Out of curiosity though Tourmaline, did you learn anything from these games? That is kinda my point here. If one was to learn a lot about tax, export and trading laws. Whilst getting a handle on development, logistics and investment etc. then I would consider it more in the way of "fun learning" and make time for it.

Economic simulators are really good at showing that things snowball. At first you barely have any income and have to be on top of all your costs. But once you get going you buy bigger and bigger things more quickly that produce more and more money. What took a year to buy in the game at first you then buy in a week later on!

Rise of Industry has some concept of demand which is fun. So you can make a great product, but if no one in the area is demanding it you're gonna go bankrupt.

You also have to deal with transportation and can set up entire logistics systems to move products around the resources and goods around the map to different markets and factories. Basically you get to deal with and manage flow rates.

Tropico adds another layer of managing sentiments of your people. Basically just reduces down to different groups have different values so you have to do things to make them happy and not revolt/protest. Also makes for a fun test of a socialist system vs a capitalist system. Both can work, but jfc the socialist system is way more difficult to manage and while it's easier to get rid of poverty, people are not rewarded much for being more educated either.

idk if you ever played Kiyosaki's game called Cashflow or one of the knockoffs of it. I'd be interested in making a better version of that, but there you at least get the concept of buying assets to produce you income so you don't have to work.

Thanks a lot for the information Tourmaline! I will be really very interested to play these games when finally finally finally chilling on vacation, safe in the knowledge that whilst playing those games I am making money just lying there with a cold beer on hand planning my next venture haha! (eta 3 years :p) Will get back to you then for some tips!

I wonder if that is still true.

Entrepreneurs and businessmen get pretty good media coverage these days thanks to Silicon Valley and the rise if the internet business. Elon Musk, Jack Ma...

Business is seen as cool these days. But there is a perception bias though. “Cool business” are usually related to IT and internet or to a less extent tech. It is much bigger than that. But every time when someone says they want to do a business it is usually that.

Like some kind of Start-Uppy thing, yeah.

You reminded me of this consulting firm ad that is on the side of one of the highways here, it reads

BETTER STRATEGY.
BETTER NERDS.

I'm not offended by it or anything but it sounds so off or something, makes me cringe every time.

Ironically some of the most successful people I know aren't "smart" in the terms of book smart.
