I've finally passed the hump and gotten my game project to a small audience for play-testing.
In the future, the idea -> feedback time *must* be much shorter than 3 years (better would be 3 months) - read my intro post and update if you want to know why it took so long.
Despite my feeling the demo is garbage, I'm getting some positive feedback as well as critical feedback from the public - that tells me there's something to this.
The game
The game is an auto-battle game in which the player programs their party member's AI by piecing together these hexagonal pieces that make up a sort of visual scripting language.
The player can preview battles before deploying their units and adjust their party member AI according to the upcoming battles.
I can see the current game idea being split into two interesting more focused games - so I may experiment with that.
My headspace
There's this adage that 90% of new businesses fail, and another one that 99% of indie game projects fail - is that an overlap or multiplicative I wonder...
In any case, I'm now in the feedback collection stage while I decide whether I want to even continue with this idea.
I currently have no income and have been running on savings for a couple of years - the temptation to start other businesses or get a job is very high at the moment. I have the skills and some potential clients to start an efficient website agency for small businesses. I have the programming skills and experience to get a $100K+ job temporarily. I also have the design skills to start a number of online businesses that sell digital products, similar to what Lex outlined in his thread.
Where to go from here?
I'm not sure, I will take some time to think about which direction to go - but one this is for sure: I will take meaningful action after making the decision.
I could very well see myself getting a temporary job while working on the game project and further growing my YouTube channel as a marketing channel - I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link to it here, but you can just look up my name on YT if you are interested.
Updates to follow.
