LLC formation

Awhile back, I remember reading about LLC formation and someone mentioned forming a "blanket" LLC with a generic name and then starting ventures under this LLC, so if the venture didn't pan out there wouldn't be the cost of setting up and dissolution of the LLC. Can someone talk more about how that would work?
