How to inspire young teenagers to ‘open their mind’?

Anything related to matters of the mind

Hi,

My son received a great present (AUD1000) for his 13 birthday from a very generous aunt.
Being 13 that is more money than he actually needs and I would like to get him interest in investing/saving.
I know he is young and has plenty of other interest to compete with school, sports etc like any teenager.

You who have kids how have you managed to make them see over the horizon and light their entrepreneurially spirit?
Thanks you
j

I've seen families that turn making money into a game. Maybe not with the full thousand, but you could challenge him to turn $100 into $500.

"Sure, you could spend that $1000 now, but what if you could turn that $1000 into $1400? $2000? $100,000?"

Set a target, something he wants, se if he can grow it and maybe even offer to match his profit to get the 'goal'?

I had a "troubled" teenage brother who I helped turn his life around in 90 days

I led by example

I talked about what I do passionately (which inspired him)
He saw me doing it (he saw what I was doing "worked"..which made him trust me)
Asked if he wanted to participate ( he wanted the results I was getting)

So I wouldn't tell him to invest it or save it

1) I would talk about how cool investing/saving it
2) I let him see me investing/saving money
3) Ask if he wants "some of the action"

As the teen that has the desire to put his money to work(19 at the moment and at the beginning of the journey[about 3 years in]) For me it was getting the book rich dad poor dad(I know theres a lot of controversy over this book), it was enough to get me interested in being smart with my money. I also HATED reading before that book, but I was getting interested in making money so my older brother gave me the book to look at, and it was at the right time.

There are plenty of other books and learning material now but Rich dad poor dad was my introduction. So from that, in my personal experience it is finding what makes him tick and spiking that interest to use that money for good.

At 13 I had no clue what the value of a dollar was and was far too ignorant too listen to my dad and his words of learn how to invest. It was really at 17 when I made that transition from wanting to go through the system(ignorantly) to wanting to continuously educate myself and be more open minded to what life really is all about. Now I do want to make money, but realize it is all about the fact of whether or not I am deserving of it by the actions to take. And it has to be done in a way I am providing any skills or ideas that other people need or find interesting.

Those are my personal experiences and thoughts thus far and wish you the best,

Best of luck!
-Elliott
