To remedy this Vertcoin was created as the ‘logical evolution of litecoin’, introducing tech called ‘Adaptive N-factor’. The paper continues to explain that N-factor is a component of the Scrypt algorithm. Scrypt uses N-factor to decide how much memory it will require chips to use in order to create a hash. Vertcoin’s Adaptive N-factor functions to increase the required memory over time, to confound ASICs efforts at being coefficient. So there ya go, Vertcoin was designed to beat ASICs.
