Hi,

Just want to ask your opinion on an idea I have. It seems like "prepping" is a good growing market to get into and I also like to stay somewhat prepared myself.

If you found a site with great how-to guides and knowledge-base articles, instructional videos and a community forum for just about any topic pertaining to "prepping", ranging from gardening to securing your home to secure use of computers etc., and you could get it without all kinds of pesky ads - would you pay $5 per month for it? That's like almost half of a netflix subscription.

Am also thinking to have a part of the site open with ad-based content.

In other words; A global community site for preppers with a community forum, news, articles, curated content.

In addition to that an ecommerce store selling digital and physical goods.
(The items for sale in the store is obviously not included in the subscription.)

This is something I plan to do next to a full time consulting job (and my wife will help me somewhat as well).
Plan to hire freelance writers etc. and outsource accounting and legal.

Don't like ads? Remove them while supporting the forum. Subscribe.

I would never pay for information I can find for free on the internet.
Make the site, give the value and sell the tools, thats how you monetize it.(and affiliate stuff sure, if you are into that)

Example: Gardening, tips, tricks, videos, produce, advice, pest control, water management...
On the Gardening articles you sell pots and tools
On the pest control, you sell insect poison, sticky tape for flyies and stuff like that.

Sure, ok, good point. I just thought if people pay for this forum, someone could pay for my forum as well. People pay for newspapers and books online too, right?

They might, I would not.
Its a matter of perceived value.

People can find most answers to the areas you specified via YouTube these days. And those will come up first in a search because Google have a vested interest.

If you specialise though and go deep then you stand a chance. But you need to become an authority on your subject. Provide information that is not readily out there (at least for free) or hard to collate.

Right, that's what I were thinking as well. That's why I would curate content and add a forum. So it becomes much like the fastlane forum, but for preppers and with articles as well. Something like "Why spend hours googling, when you can find it all here, all for the price of a cup of coffee". I mean with free stuff, you generally get what you pay for - Nothing. Or at least a lot of work and not much substance. And another selling point is to be the "Verified source". Like how do you know the stuff you find on google isn't a bunch of BS?
And having 20 years of IT experience, I can tell you that people today spend an inordinate amount of time sifting through tons of information looking for factually accurate content.

And by the way, Youtube is just another marketing channel, driving traffic to the site.

Think about Substack.com - easy and .i think. free to start.
Make content, check if people would subscribe for $5.
If they do, you got cash for developing forum, e-comm etc.
Good luck!
