I don't know anything about mailing lists. I want this thread to be a resource for clueless people like me to get up to speed. If you are knowledgeable about this, please share! Reply with resources and links that you've found to be helpful.
My motivation:
I own a defunct domain that used to have *a lot* of traffic. ~100K users/day volume. It still generates tons of hits because of the backlinks still out there. The traffic is targeted.
I thought a few days ago to put up a mailing list, so that if I decide to launch a service on the domain, I'll have a great way to seed traffic and get the word out.
I'm getting > 150 signups/day to this mailing list, and my selling proposition on the landing page is not even optimized. It's ~5% CTR from landing page to mailing list signup page, and ~15% conversion to subscribe.
I haven't yet sent any mail to them, and haven't thought through what to do beyond get signups.
