I just have read the article of kissmetrics, and I will add a couple of ways more:
-Buy leads.
-Use affiliate programs.

Shortly after its release, my app got 23,000 downloads and was ranked 2x on the front screen of it's category (new releases, and 'What's hot').

Things I did
Chose a large niche that is under delivered in the app store
Large number of downloads in a short period of time (it's a free app)
4-5 star reviews
Targeting keywords
Promoted on Facebook pages with 100,000+ followers

Things I did not do yet
Paid traffic
Getting featured on blogs

I'm far from an expert at marketing apps, and I attribute a lot of my downloads to choosing a niche that is big, and under delivered.

Do you know how you are going to make money from your app?

And this is how quickly your sales drop if there is a bug with the app store not showing anything in your category for 5 days (December 5th-9th).

Lesson learned - "Don't have one point of failure"
