Talk to pretty much anyone about their goals or NY's Resolutions and they'll mention some goal or achievement...

I want to lose weight.
I want to bench 315.
I want to get out of debt.
I want to start a business.
I want to write 5 books.

However, if you examine any goal, ultimately, that goal's achievement depends entirely on saying NO, REMOVING something, or excluding some action.

For example, for the person losing weight... they have to give up/remove/say no to CARBS, or SUGAR or MCDONALDS or SOMETHING.

For the "get out debt" person, they have to give up eating out and impulse spending.

For the "write 5 books" guy, they have to give up television, TMZ, or video games.

In other words, achieving goals really is about saying NO and GIVING UP on something.

My question for you is this...

In 2015, what will you be giving up to achieve your goals?

And in December 2015, will you look back on this thread and say "I did it!"? Or "Crap! That lasted 2 weeks!"

The thing is, most goals could be guessed based on what you are giving up.

I'll be giving up sugar completely, moderating carbs (20-35 g), and making sure I stick to plan. So far it's been 3 weeks and I haven't missed a day.

I'll also be giving up time I waste doing useless things to focus more on my work (school + business). I need to retire my parents before something I would regret happens.

TV.

Once the NFL season is done and the season's end of the few shows I still watch, then I'm done with it.

Late night websurfing. After 11pm, no internet unless I'm actually working on a project at that time... which is basically never.

  • I just folded three businesses and plan to fold one more by Summer. The last one is more difficult because it involves multiple partners. I plan to treat two others as hobbies that give me supplemental income while I build my main one. I was the king of polygamy in business!
  • I'm giving up on sugar and moving to a cross between slow-carb and Bulletproof. My wife just did the same, so I can finally complete my quest to do so entirely!
  • I'm giving up on digital painting for money. I may be damn good at it, but it takes far too much time that could be focused on more important and scalable things.
  • I'm giving up on trying to do everything myself. It took a lot of learning to have the right skills and processes to make this happen, but it's built in to my group's culture now, and we'll refine our collaborative method over the coming months.
  • I'm saying no to starting new businesses. This will be my first year to be singularly focused in business.

Wheat (the devil's grain)
Soy - lots of info around the web on the hazards of soy, particularly GMO soy (which is about the only kind). Linked to liver and kidney disease and reproductive issues.
Alcohol - probably needs no explanation.

Cheers,

I've given up carbs ... and am committed to 7 miles a day ... along with 15 minutes of low-impact super-sets ... 7 days a week.

I know, I know ... not textbook.

But it works for me.

And most importantly ... it's a daily plan I know I will stick to.

Started in late September. Hit the mark 65%.

Should have been 100% ... but I fell off the wagon when I experimented with Paleo ... gave myself some cheat days ... and tried modifying my exercise routine (based on what I read in fitness mags).

Big mistake.

Should have stuck to the original plan.

And this time ... ZERO cheat days.

Cheat days ... lead to cheat weeks ... lead to cheat months.

I know my old self.

I must defeat him.

So in 2015 ... I'm committed 100% ... to 100% compliance ... until I hit my fitness goals.

Then ... when I hit my target rate ... I will ease up on the distance and start focusing more on the weights.

But first things first ... I need to get my body fat percentage down.

What makes me upset with myself ... is the perfect body was something that was COMPLETELY within my power to achieve.

I control what goes in my mouth. I control whether I exercise.

In 2015. No excuses.

I am giving up second guessing my decisions
I am giving up looking for more information when I have all the info needed to take action. I tend to think that things have to be harder and complicated than what they are and its just not true.
Stop Second guessing my decisions
stop consuming sugar and bad carbs because i know these are what will determine how much weight I shed.
stop focusing on stupid shit that will get me nowhere.

I'm giving up excuses for why I shouldn't plan out my next day. It's amazing how I can let my baby, my wife, my cocktail get in the way of 10 focused minutes for creating a concrete timetable for accomplishing things that need accomplishing.

Ha ha! Well for me there isn't much to give up anymore. I spend most of my time reading and writing and applying.
I don't spend much money except on my business.

What can I give up? Giving a crap what people think. Apply the zero thing! Been working on that since October with Review and people in general. Think it's a necessary thing when I need to get on
Goal 1. Radio stream
Goal 2. Writing Workshop
Goal 3. Improve blog and e-book writing
Goal 4. Two books out a week in either fiction, non-fiction, or poetry
Goal 5. Revise my novel, get funds for it, and edit and publish
Goal 6. Keep my content on schedule every week, blog, radio, slide share, you tube
Goal 7. Marketing schedule for books
Goal 8. Learn Dutch Language so I can expand to dutch world
Goal 9. And read and update skills in marketing, business, and my area of expertise.
Goal 10. Start engaging with people instead of being an introvert! :)

I suppose I can give up some cake, cookies, and candy, but that's given to me. lol

Awesome post. I call these my 'Anti-goals'; I write them down everytime I write I out my goals and it absolutely works.
Also helps to decide on minimum days/year amount, to incorporate 'cheat' days. Alot of times you don't even feel like using them, but are necessary.

Body:
Sugar < 20g
Carbs < 35g
Cut out all 'man-made' food.
Not talking at the gym.

minimum 300 days of the year.
Meaning I can Still afford 15 days every quarter of B.S eating and still be good.

Max 10 mins of personal FB/day.
Not sleeping more than 8 hours.
No more hanging out with Time wasters.

Not spending any moment that doesn't have a positive ROI on my time.

Just some of my 2015 architecture.

I'm giving up everything that is holding me back.

Excuses, reasons, people, activities, what ever it may be.

If it's not benefiting my current process/goals, or adding value to my skill set, it's history.

No more time for games, and no more time for not having the results needed to reach the next step.

I assure all, by the time December 2015 roles around, I'll have a year's worth of progress that I have grinded out and worked my a$$ off for.
Will I have a million in the bank, with a lime green lambo? Most likely not, but you can bet your a$$ I'll be a year closer.

In 2015 i will say NO to :

-Distractions ( i will not jump from one article to another while reading on the net, i will spend 15-20 mn on skype with family instead of hours sometimes )
- Trying to help people who are not ready or not willing to help themselves ( this was a big time waster in 2014)

- Relying too much on intuition for decision making ( eventhough, so far my intuition helped a lot ) but need to pay more attention to facts ...so i can be more prepared.

I stopped making resolutions in my early 20s when I realized I never kept them. I told myself that if I was really serious about accomplishing something then I would do it on day one, and not on some future date.

So last october when I decided to reduce my sugar intake, I did. Six days a week I eat all the healthy crap my body can take, from fruits, to vegetables, and fish. On the seventh day I rest and eat whatever the heck I want. My plan worked better than expected. Not only did I drop 16 pounds, but found out today at my annual that I'm now underweight...

Also last year, I greatly reduced my tv time. I've never been a big TV watcher. With no cable or online subscriptions, there's not much to watch anyway. But I took it a step further in December and decided to put myself on a no TV diet, the same as I did with sugar, after seeing how well that worked out. So six days a week I watch nothing, with the seventh day being reduced to just 4 hours of TV time. Now my only comfort is a radio and I actually enjoy it.

The same is true with my new business. I won't get into all the failed ones I had last year, but after reading The Millionaire Fastlane , I decided to take MJ's advice and focus only on one. I gave myself a time frame of 5 years to take it from nothing to something I can be proud of. I launched on January 1st, but was already hard at work on it weeks before. I only choose the date because when I looked up in the middle of my work, I realized the new year was only a few days away and decided it would be a nice day to officially hit go by buying my domain name.

There are a bunch of other things I would like to improve about myself like exercising more and getting out more, but since I haven't made any efforts to change these things, I guess I'm just not ready yet. But when the day comes I'll know.

By the way, it's nice to meet all of you and I wish everybody the best of luck with their goals and businesses in 2015.

Dan Pena says the same things
What are you willing to give up to achieve your goal(s)
How much are you willing to savrifice
how much time? are you willing to work 12- 18 hours a day on your business? idea
How much energy?

At the moment my main goal for the next 3 months is to work on my product and thats going to take 100's of hours of research and taking action on it.

I'm trying to quit wasting time surfing the web. I'm using FocalFilter a lot more to help me with that.
I quit playing video games, which is easy because I'm generally tired of them anyway.
I decided to quit pursuing any hobbies until I'm making at least 10x more money.

I'm just interested in what people are looking at on the web, or what they're considering web surfing, because I keep seeing people say their wasting time doing this, and need to block things so they're more productive. I suppose In the past I wasted a lot of time playing a video game, but for the most part I've really used the web for learning and educating myself. I don't really necessarily think of that is wasting time. Although, I don't read so many blogs anymore or articles, because I'm in the books and videos for learning stuff now. Just curious.

Ah, thanks for the Batman slap MJ. This is my biggest problem.
Like Esquire, I have to defeat my old self: The Dark Blake (like Dark Link, Zelda OoT fans)

I was watching a good movie today called The Internship about two aging guys who sign up as interns at Google because they can't compete in the current job market with their outdated skills. While the premise is slowlane (get a better job), there are many good entrepreneurial lessons to be learned in it. Here's a review with lessons that I could have wrote, I feel the exact same way: http://theexpatchick.blogspot.ca/2013/09/movie-monday-internship.html

One scene almost put a tear in my eye. Owen Wilson is talking about choices, and he says: "Trust me, I know from experience, that you don't want to wake up one day and see that the first thing on your calendar is Regret".

That hit me hard, because I realized that I regret 80% of the choices I have made over the past 5 years. Maybe 10.

So I think I'm going to exclude all the things that I regret doing:
  1. Hooking up with girls I didn't love
  2. Treating people badly
  3. Surfing Facebook's news feed
  4. Drinking to excess
  5. Smoking weed and tobacco
  6. Hanging out with the wrong people
  7. Trying to impress people
  8. Eating bad food
  9. Watching porn
  10. Sleeping excessively
  11. Watching more than 1 movie per day. I watched a series for 11 hours straight once (Stay away from Lost and Prison Break people).
  12. Video games (I've pretty much curbed this but I used to be bad for it)
  13. Responding to bad problems with physical violence. There's always a better way.
This is going to be a lot harder than defeating Dark Link. But the strategy will be similar: he copies your moves, so you have to analyse yourself and change it up as much as possible. I think I chose the perfect analogy for that one...I hope somebody gets it. Thanks again MJ.

Sucralose and Red40 (artificial colors) is my "give up" -- anyone in fitness knows that this shit is in virtually all of the supplements.

http://www.muscleforlife.com/lets-bring-change-to-the-workout-supplement-industry/

Check out this MJ DeMarco. This guy could really bring some serious change to the fitness industry. He makes some great supplements that have clinically proven ingredients and no artificial sweeteners! He's really trying to help people not to be fooled by all the crap put out by the fitness industry. The supplements work pretty great too!

I have a couple things I want to stop this year included in my resolutions. First off I've been working on stopping being so selfish. In fact, one of my goals for the year is helping my brother gain 20 pounds (Hopefully mostly muscle!). He's pretty small right now and a lot of people think he's malnourished. I've been there and know how bad it feels. I fixed it, it was tough, and I think I can help him do the same!

The other big thing I want to stop in 2015 is to stop being so stressed and anxious all the time. For longer than I can remember I've picked my fingers, and I've come to a realize it's something I do when I'm either really anxious or stressed. I'm not exactly sure yet how to get these under control, but I know I will get it done! I think that once I get that under control I can fix some other problems I've been having and it will help in college and also some business stuff I've been working on.

  • Excess time surfing the web without purpose
  • PMO
  • Carbs & Sugar
  • Busywork
  • Complaining, negative self-talk, negative thought loops
  • Personality Inhibition
  • Fear of missing out on social events/paying too much attention to what my social group does
  • Unrealistic plans that DON'T consider social life
  • Hopefully I can stop cracking my knuckles, biting my nails, cracking my neck... I don't think I'll be able to stop cracking my back, I need to do it or it feels stiff.
