Hi everyone!

I joined the forum yesterday and spent a couple of hours reading through some of the threads last night, then logged straight on again as soon as I got out of bed this morning as there's so much amazing info and advice on here!

I'm Kelly, a mum in UK raising my 3 beautiful children on my own with a huge motivation for success.

5 years ago I was in a very toxic relationship with my children's father, I had no confidence, no self belief...I had a mobile beauty business which barely brought in any money and was topped up by government benefits, if this was the SCRIPTED life, I was definitely living it. All I wanted was to make my kids proud, give them a good life but I just felt like a failure.

Fast forward a year, I'd started reading self development books as I had nowhere to go but UP and somehow found the strength to leave my relationship and start a new life..for the first 6 months I felt like a lost puppy, I'd been in the relationship for 8years and thought life was supposed to be all struggle and fighting, but then suddenly I broke free and I had no idea what I was doing or who I was.

More self development books and youtube videos made me realise even more that I wasn't living the life I wanted, I CRAVED freedom (what I didn't know at the time was I craved to live an UNSCRIPTED life).

So I did something crazy, I went against the grain, against the advice of my family and friends and I took my children out of the school system to home educate them....and On this EXACT same day I started my Amazon business.

It didn't happen instantly from that day but not long after, life started getting GOOD! I suddenly felt this freedom I'd never experienced before...no more rushing around, stressed, in a morning to drag my kids to school so they could sit down, shut up and do what they were told, all to prepare them for a 9-5 job when they left school.

Within a couple of months of starting my Amazon business I was able to hang up my spray-tanning gloves once and for all and pack in my time-sucking beauty business. Now I had the extra money, time and freedom to spend with my children, enjoying watching them grow and really learning about them as individuals.

Fast forward to the present day, I've made a lot of mistakes, (financially) and this was trigger that made me buy MJ DeMarco's book Unscripted after reading The Millionaire Fastlane .

So last year, business was going really well and, not having any sort of financial education, I got in to a habit of spending. I was desperate to move house as we were living in a small housing-association property and I found a beautiful house...the rent was an extra £400 a month but 'hey! I can afford it now as business is doing great'... we moved house in September 2017 and then in Feb. 2018 my 15year old VW polo was having a lot of problems so I decided to upgrade. I signed the 3 year contract for a brand new 7 seater Citroen for a payment of £290 every month.
As you can see, I clearly thought I was 'minted' and could afford the extra house and car payments. I didn't even have any money in a savings account! (Again, I had NO financial education and obviously learnt by watching my mum who never had any money and ended up in huge debt she couldn't repay).

The spending must of been going to my head as between the space of January 2018 and July 2018 I'd took my children on 4 holidays and booked the flights for another holiday in December this year.

It wasn't until I'd got back from our week away in July that the 'shit hit the fan' and I realised I had no money left. I owe money to my suppliers, money to my credit card and I only have enough stock to last me a month on Amazon.

Basically I have no business left after 3 years because of my foolish choices with money.
I can no longer live in the home I'm in and I'm grateful to have found another one which is £200 cheaper, we're moving next month.

My plan now is to pay back my suppliers, pay my credit card debt and not spend another penny unneccesarily until I've found a way to create 'value-vouchers'.

All my life I've chased money and I've had a big shock now because money is running away fast! And, thanks to UNSCRIPTED I realise I need to create value.

So currently I'm researching as much as I can, reading through the posts in this awesome forum because I am NEVER going to be so foolish with money again. My next business will be for the long-term, not just something which brings money in quickly so I can go on holiday or buy a new car.

All I want is the freedom to be able to live a happy life with my children, travel when and where we please, leave a legacy and do something good in the world!

Nice to meet you all :)

Kelly

Hi Kelly,
Congratulations on your courageous decisions to end a toxic relationship and do what you think is good for your children (not what everyone does).
How does the home education work? Do you have a private teacher who comes to your home or do you teach your children yourself with school books? (sorry if this question is stupid )
It seems that you are doing a lot and learning a lot from your mistakes. I'm sure your financial situation will be fine soon, now that you have experience in business.

This is a very interesting question. Maybe Kelly86 can elaborate a bit on this. And if your children are self-taught, what are you teaching them and does your youngest learn with the oldest and vice versa?

Hello, Kelly and welcome!

We are all going through struggles at some point. It is hard to read about yours but I'm sure you are much more careful with money now and think at least twice if you really NEED something or you just want it.
So don't dwell on it too much, because you can never change the past. But you sure can learn from it and make better decisions in the future!

Wish you all the best!

Not a stupid question at all, I get asked similar questions on a weekly basis, especially as the concept of home education ( in UK especially) isn’t widely known. You’d be surprised at how many times a person has asked me if it’s even legal! In the U.K. every parent has the right to home educate their child. In the US it’s known as homeschooling and there are many ways to help a child learn. The way which works for my children is aka ‘unschooling’. Their lessons are learnt by living life. We travel to learn new languages and learn about different cultures, we visit museums to find out about history, my kids watch documentaries on YouTube on whatever they feel like learning about and we have interesting lengthy discussions on it afterwards, my 6 year old son is an avid reader and he learnt by playing computer games and reading food labels and street signs, as well as reading books together. My 9 year old daughter has decided she wants to learn Spanish and we’re using an app to learn. My 11 year old daughter loves to make videos and is very creative. On the maths side, we sometimes do worksheets, other than this they learn in the supermarket when they have money, they have to work out costs and how much change they’ll get etc. Even baking together is a maths lesson, weighing sugar etc

You can’t prevent a child from learning as it’s what they do naturally. The difference between what we do and school is that they’re following there own interests and paths in life. (Which makes them LOVE learning!)

On the ‘social’ side, as this gets asked a lot. We attend home-ed groups and meet ups and they’ve made some lovely friends.

When you’re not locked up in a school 9-3, the socialisation opportunities are all around, they get to interact with people of all ages, all backgrounds and different walks of life and this has helped them become confident communicators too :)

Sounds great! Thank you for the explanation! Now I'm gonna google and find out about the current home schooling situation in Germany. The idea of location independency was always very interesting to me, no need to ask for vacation or days off

There's a thread on the Inside where @ZCP took over a business for his two sons from @biophase so they'd learn how to do business, which is fascinating to read. To see how his kids managed the business, put themselves behind it and what they've learned from it, is something a school could never teach. Although they were still attending school if i remember correctly.

Welcome!

Be careful about Amazon businesses, they violate the first commandment (Control) :)

Yep, even as I write this I’ve been waiting 2weeks for one of my products to undergo hazmat review. I could write a hell of a long post ranting about Amazon! But I’m also grateful for the freedom it’s enabled me to have and the experience I’ve got on researching markets, importing, branding etc and I hope I will be able to use all those skills one day in starting my own ecommerce website.

Welcome!

Just wanted to congratulate you on recognizing and removing you and your children from an unhealthy environment.

I never understood why a man would make his wife and children's (especially the kids) lives so miserable because of choices he made.

Glad you moved on.
