Hello all !

About me:
i am a 20 y/o male in New Zealand
and have read TMF , found it a interesting read.

i live in a small rural town just south of Auckland (NZ's largest city)
the dairy farm / tradie type of town. the type of town that people of my age only aim to be
hairdressers (females) and builders, mechanics, panel and painters

kicked out of school at the age of 15.
since then i have not done any real schooling other than get the basics go to university if i choose to.

from the age of 16 i have worked 2 and a half years in a factory packaging herbs and spices, forklift driver in a wood yard, lived and worked in the uk for 5months pulling rubbish and roots from dirt in the back of huge dumper trucks and for 2 months up till the present day i have been working and a solo bouncer at a small local pub on thurs, fri and sat nights.

at this point in time i have $370 NZD ($330 USD ) to my name, no car and i am living at my mum and dads house.

just like the rest of the world the rescission has made it near impossible for many to find jobs.
i am getting $258.96 USD cash in hand after working 6pm-1am Thurs, fri and sat nights.
it is some money but not enough.

so i am thinking about importing rings and necklaces from sites like Alibaba to new zealand and selling them on Buy online and sell with NZ's #1 auction & classifieds site | Trade Me (a new zealand version of ebay)
at the start i plan on only spending $100 on "samples" of these items and see how i go from there.
as i have never imported or done anything like this before it will be a great experiment and experience.

any info/ help regarding importing anf stuff like that would be really great :)

Cheers,
BCP

cheers for that link very interesting read !

only problem is New Zealand is much smaller population wise than the US or Europe and we are so far away from the rest of the world that selling on lets say ebay and sending to an american buyer would add too much for postage price.

i am wondering if going aboud to smaller new zealand shops and offering to sell products to them so they can then on sell at retail price would work?

or is sticking to internet sales the way to go?

Welcome to the forum!
I have spent considerable time in the Auckland area as I worked for Continental Airlines (now United) and we would have 5 day layovers in Auckland. I'd fly there several times a month. I was always on the lookout on what one could market to that area.

Regarding jewelry, I would personally consider Bali jewelry rather than Chinese. There are enough tourist and local shops in Auckland and even down to the South Island (Christchurch area) that I would think one could initially create some offline sales. Also, if you can source sheepskin, perhaps you might be able to create an export market. I used to sell NZ sheepskin covers for the handle on inflight carry on suitcases as an example. No one in the US had them.
Sometimes there is opportunity right under your nose. Common locally, but not globally.
NZ is the home of sheepskin. Figure out a new unique idea for it and you'd probably hit a home run.
If not sheepskin, I would suggest finding a local unique item with good availability that isn't common online and begin with that.
Create the market
Keep reinvesting the profit WISELY.
Develop a clientele, and SELL your VISION to other manufacturers/producers of local products.
Creating a Vision once you see the possibilities and have some sales under your belt is half the battle.

Taking that Vision expressed with passion to others that can help you on your journey is the other half.

It is out there. Keep looking. Don't get discouraged. You can find that product/service that others want/need.

Good Luck and stay with it!

Randall
