A year ago, I left my job to embrace the digital nomad lifestyle, dreaming of global adventures and more. However, these dreams weren't originally mine but were influenced by YouTube and Facebook algorithms.
I was actually seeking approval from women and a sense of belonging among expats, which I couldn't find in my small hometown. My life had been dominated by a victim mentality, yet I had nothing significant to show for it.
My true motivation wasn't about achieving specific life goals like traveling as a digital nomad or starting a business for freedom. It was about filling an internal void that caused me constant anxiety and sadness.
Pain has always been my primary motivator. As a child, I was overweight, indulging in pizza and pasta and spending days with my PlayStation or exploring computer systems. This was likely because I felt alienated from society, introverted, shy, and finding relationships more of a struggle than enjoyable.
I knew I needed to interact with people to get what I wanted, starting with women. After years on pick-up artist forums and applying countless strategies, I morphed into the "alpha male" archetype – extroverted, brave, ambitious, humorous, emotionally controlled, and dominant. It worked, but the resulting ego boost from objectifying women and achieving my goals, like a kiss or more, was fleeting.
Yearning for something different, I followed a friend to Thailand. There, the ease of romantic encounters provided an extreme ego boost. I felt desired and powerful for the first time.
I contemplated moving to Thailand, mainly for the ease of relationships, though I rationalized it with my love for scuba diving and tropical weather.
After returning home, I realized I needed online income to live in Thailand. I dove into the world of crypto and financial independence, seeking a simple enough income to sustain my life of leisure and casual relationships there.
Initially, I turned my family's savings into a six-figure sum through crypto, only to lose it all later. My stubbornness and belief in beating the market led to an obsession with recovering the money through crypto trading.
Years of desperation and intermittent wins followed. Even when I developed a successful method, my tendency to chase new ventures hindered its application.
During the pandemic, I found myself depressed, excessively screen-bound, and risking money in the volatile crypto market. The collapse of major players caused significant financial losses.
Fed up, I stepped away from crypto. Confronted with rapid hair loss, a lack of social life, and a daily weed habit, my self-esteem plummeted. I then shifted to bartending in the French Riviera, doubling the average Italian salary, followed by the superyacht industry, which, despite high pay, was grueling and led to a mental breakdown.
In search of an alternative, I turned to self-publishing. As with past ventures, I immersed myself, learned everything, and eventually found success. Yet, the unpredictability of the platform and lack of control made me realize its limitations.
Currently, I'm living off my self-publishing income, but with diminishing interest. My drive to escape the yachting world has faded, making even consistent daily work a challenge.
Now, I'm eager to use my cycle of obsession and practice to build a sustainable, long-term business. Unlike many entrepreneurs with grand visions, my motivation is to protect my digital lifestyle and avoid a conventional 9-to-5 job. This is my story, and I'm seeking a way to act on positive motivation rather than escaping fear and pain. Any advice?
Has anyone else transitioned from a non-traditional path (seeking approval or escaping from pain) to entrepreneurship? I’d love to hear your story
