Hey everyone, I'm excited to be here.
I read MJ's TMF when I was 17 years old. It was deeply inspiring: proof that inspiration can be more powerful than knowledge. (edit: not that TMF isn't packed full of knowledge, but most of it didn't sink in until later years)
My Background:
Inspired by MJ, I created my first "business" at age 18: a simple website solving a problem I had experienced.
- I went off to college, only working on my website intermittently, but never took it seriously.
- Last year, I graduated college, after failing on multiple other small business ventures (consumer product, SaaS, and others) while in school
- My first website has grown organically since then, to 20-50k users a month
- I decided to go "all in" with this website
- Tried selling eBooks, in-depth video courses, and services
- Only services had any real demand, so I started doing consulting work for clients I got through my website
Now, a year later, I've made roughly $20k over a 1.5 year period. I'm still living at home ($20k not enough to move out in CA).
> Recently, I got a message from a bigger consulting company in the same industry, offering an affiliate partnership, where I'd get a nice commission for each client I send them.
So now I'm facing a dilemma.
My Dilemma:
Do I go "all in" on consulting work? I think I could scale it to $80-100k from the lessons I've learned this past 1.5 year within 2 years.
- Scaling past $100k would be tough without hiring (not something I really want to do)
- The market itself is relatively small, and may go up in flames in 5 years—it's not guaranteed to be around
- I'm not at all passionate about this market. I'm not solving problems that are meaningful to me. I don't feel proud telling people what I do.
- I really dislike doing the consulting calls with clients, but they're a critical part of the service I'm providing
Or, do I switch to an affiliate site? And find a job, work on my other side businesses, etc.
- I'd earn less as an affiliate. Maybe $35-60k if everything goes well and I focus on boosting traffic.
- But it'd free up my time from consulting calls. I have 5+ other websites I'm building/have launched and depending on which gain traction, I want to go all in on a different website
- I'd also explore getting a temporary JOB so I can move out. It sucks being 24 years old and living at home. I have strong web developer skills (full stack) and decent digital marketing (SEO, content marketing, copywriting), but not much job experience besides high school.
My near-future goals are twofold:
A.) Move out of my parents house — stop being a leech and grow as a young man
B.) Create a business that can earn enough to support me, that I can either scale into a Fastlane business, or bide time while I work on a bigger projects to go Fastlane
I'd love to hear your guys' thoughts, and I'm stoke to be here (after being a lurker for some time).
Thanks in advance,
Snowball
