Taking the first step is a big hurdle to a lot of people! They talk a big game but when it comes down to it they are afraid to pull the trigger even on just a few hundred dollars sample order. Congrats on your action!

An $80 item with $50 profit is certainly a good product to start with or even carry permanently. What I was looking at is that you said it was a $40,000 order and 500 units thereby being an $800 item not an $80 one.

Selling 10 a week there is absolutely no way I would order 500 of them. Tell the supplier that you need a sample order of 50 items to test the consistency of the product quality over a smaller order before you can put out the money for a large order. If they say no then time to find a different...

That really isn't enough info to make an informed decision. How many of these item can you sell on an average week? Month? I don't like to have more products than I can sell in a months time. Obviously that is just a loose guideline but if the item is selling 10 a week 500 is a year long supply...

A quick little progress update for me. I ended up selling $60,000 for the entire month of November which is more than the 50k goal I set. I am hoping to hit 100k in sales in Decmber before the 18th which will be my cut off sales date until after Christmas (way too many people buy on the 23rd...

That is mostly true but not always. I have items that I am selling $15 higher than the cheapest seller. I am "best match" and selling them like crazy. If you can get best match you can charge higher prices and still get lots of sales.

Getting to "best match" is a killer upgrade! Sales skyrocket and you can charge more normally as well!

The drop in sales depends a lot on the niche. Some items sell well all year around and then pick up Nov & Dec and go back to normal in January. Some items drop like a rock in January. I would guess yours is the first one being a safety item. You will probably go to selling the amount per day...

    Black Friday...

    HOT!
Black Friday was about double of small business Saturday for me. Guess people just want deals not to support smaller online sellers.

All they can do is tell you no so its definately worth asking. I do agree that for low $$ items they probably will not want the hassle.

    Ebay start-up :)

    EXECUTION
Awesome job! Absolutely awesome! Taking the first steps and finding the first profitable product can be extremely hard but you did it! Now, what if you find another one that sells about the same? You now double your daily profit. What if you can find 5 different products? 10? By only finding 9...

Agree entirely. Look for products with good margins but also good dollar amounts. Buying something for .05 and selling for $1 is great margins but not something that really works for online sales because of shipping. Products that cost $10 and sell for $40, now thats more like it.

Don't get me wrong importing can work anywhere. It won't work with that product your describing. You need to find cheaper items or smaller/lighter ones with far less shipping costs.

That item at those margin obviously won't work. (unless you sell them on craigslist) An item that you can buy for $20 and sell for $30 will cause you to end up broke almost every time. I look for items that I can buy for 20 and sell for 50-60+. In Canada, I know your shipping costs are...

Building up reputation in any business is a process. If you have 10 feedback and 100% people will not have a problem buying from you if you are the cheapest seller.( From my experience) If you couple being the cheapest with offering free expedited shipping then you will certainly see good sales...

Keep checking on his listing for the next week. See how many he sells in a weeks time. If he still has 29 sold he obviously didn't sell any this week. Watch it for a month and you can get sales per month. If he is selling enough to make you competing worthwhile then you know before ordering.

If there are competitors with buy it now listings just watch them for a day or two. Write down how many they have as "sold" on their listing and then check back in 24 hours. If there are no competitors you have to order a sample and see how they sell.

What you have to avoid is generic items with tons of competition unless you have been selling a while. I could probably sell those same wallets and be successful selling them because of high amounts of feedback and getting the "best match" in search. I would say chalk the 5 up to a learning...

Using the "Dead Cat Bounce" to invest

    INVESTING
I normally sell one day after buying the stock. I did try options instead of the stocks for a bit but it seemed like many of the stocks did not have options with them or the options prices would change a lot with only a small movement of the stock.

I have been doing 40-50 orders a day this week. It will probably double to 100+ a day starting next week. Christmas is the busiest time of the year for me. I am planning on next year having things ordered way ahead of time and using FBA. 2. Each item is individually packaged for retail type...
