    What to watch?

    OFF-TOPIC
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Fight Club. Mr. Robot. The Professor and the Madman. Pete's Dragon (1977 version). With the caveat that Pete's mental health is higher than any other character's. Well, his and the dragon's.

Can shiny object syndrome be good?

    IDEA
If the other business flops horribly, will it still have any value? How would it compare to something simple like silver, or real estate? Not to discourage you... I've done the same thing. But the "other business" might not succeed, so you have to consider whether that's an acceptable outcome...

Personal Rules to Avoid Losing Your Wealth

    GOLD! HOT! INVESTING
Sadly they do get taken :( I have a close family member (spouse of a sibling) who lost most of the value of a 3rd generation business to embezzlement. Had to sell the business, and the family works for it under the new white knight owners. The "front desk person" took on more and more...

Learning to Program is STUPID! (or SMART?!)

    GOLD! HOT!
I'm sure I've posted in this thread before (but it's looooong now). I coded, hosted, and deployed stuff myself, then hired people to make it better. That's where I found success. In the beginning, it was simply because I had no money and programmers cost money. In the reckoning, I'm glad I...

Personal Rules to Avoid Losing Your Wealth

    GOLD! HOT! INVESTING
I had a similar experience. My dad had delegated most of his company finance and operations to one person. While he was suffering from a life threatening wound in his old age (which he recovered from, after a time) she was taking out a 6 figure loan with a forged signature and paying herself...

We have this super connected world, yet it can still take a long time for personal news to reach us. Everyone knows what color underpants the Kardashians are wearing (well, I don't... but still), and this has no impact on our lives. Yet to discover that a friend, old friend, or acquaintance has...

Personal Rules to Avoid Losing Your Wealth

    GOLD! HOT! INVESTING
That's where vacations and separation of concerns come in. Between Wifey and I, we've caught our share of them for larger companies too... simply because first I, and then she, created the habit of putting patterns and practices in place that make it very hard to hide shenanigans. * The person...

Same. There are things I delegate for practicality (accepting payments at a location, shipping products, etc.), but not without having 100% visibility and either me or my wife looking over the transactions and balancing everything. As soon as you get lazy about that, embezzlers will be sucked in...

How do you build a high quality community (like this forum) from scratch?

    IDEA
Having the community attached to something that's a going concern seems to help a lot. This one is attached to MJ's books, which have a lot of readers. Yours can be attached to your travel venture, with past, present, and future customers. I have one that's a bit different, but ties together...

When fear comes, let the wolf rise in your heart. Become the most terrifying thing in the night, the source of all fear. Embrace fear, become it, and you master it.

This is a good point. I have rules for embezzlement too. Among them: Everyone takes vacation. A person who handles checks doesn't check the mail. Nobody signs for me, or anyone else. Enforce separation of concerns.

If you can't afford to pile the money in your front yard and light it on fire, don't put it at risk. Sometimes that's what happens, more or less. Sounds overly conservative or dramatic until you think about the implications... what it implies is that your source of investment money (and other...

Yep, chefs and sushi restaurants are part of what keeps me in orbit around civilization. And Indian food. Good lord, what could be better than korma and biryani? Living in some cities can be fun, but my preference is to visit them for a while, then escape to somewhere less crowded and polluted.

Most of my family is rural too, and I'm always annoyed at how the normal non-institutionalized people are portrayed as ignorant toothless hicks. Overall, my observation of people outside of major cities is that they're more tolerant, more polite, more willing to give someone a chance if life is...

    Programming

iTunes U and various OpenCourseWare repositories have good free resources. When I learned iOS programming, I used video courses from Stanford University (because they were focused on practical application), plus the documentation from Apple, plus reading and contributing to Stack Overflow on...

Turned $5K into $100K in a year. What should I do now?

    CRYPTO INVESTING
It's hard to say what to do with it, because any advice could be wrong. But you have a pool of money, and you know at least one way to multiply your savings, given the same market conditions. So that's quite good... it's material you can work with, and something you can use to formulate...

I get them when I stay up long hours trying to do a new thing. I used to get them for programming and would wake up with 100s of variations on an algorithm... sometimes they are all wrong, and sometimes I forget them before I'm out of the shower. Occasionally one will actually be fantastic...

I've been way off more often than not. I still do good things and I'm glad I do them, but plenty of things seem more interesting or easier or better than they end up being. Also, estimating time to completion, for just about anything, is a task fraught with peril.
