Holy crap! Those are some seriously impressive word counts. I'm in awe!

    Kindle Unlimited... Authors in trouble?

    PUBLISHING
While I agree with you, here's the thing I wonder. How much is the trade-off of volume versus profit per book? I buy audiobooks all the time, and I only buy from audible because I don't want to go through any extra trouble. There's literally only one digital book I've wanted badly enough to buy...

    Kindle Unlimited... Authors in trouble?

    PUBLISHING
Interesting idea! I'm not sure that would fly with Amazon, but it's certainly thought-provoking. I bet you'd have to change more than the ending. You'd probably have to change the title and opening too. I bet there's a percentage or something that Amazon looks at. All food for thought though. :)

Great minds think alike! I've debated just such a thing. But here's my dilemma, which I'd love anyone's thoughts on... My mailing list is approaching 1,900 people. When I released Book#2, I had some problems with the Barnes & Noble posting, so Book #2 went live on B&N about a week after Amazon...

    Kindle Unlimited... Authors in trouble?

    PUBLISHING
I've noticed something fairly interesting. Before switching to adult books, I published four kids' books. Of those four, one particular book has always done better than the other three. Just by pure coincidence, this better-selling book was the only one I pulled out of Kindle Select a few months...

[PROGRESS THREAD] ChickenHawk's Self-Published Fiction EBooks

    GOLD!
Thanks so much for that!!! So true!!! And in truth, I'd have been thrilled simply to not strike out. I remember when I published my first kids' book, and no one bought it at all until I made it available for free. That was pretty darn discouraging. Even with my "underperforming" Book#3, I'm...

A quick update...Book#3 continues to do respectable, although not nearly as well as Book#1 or Book#2. Talking baseball terms, I think it's a solid single or double, but definitely not a home run. Right now, it's ranked around #2,500 and sinking pretty fast. Still, I'm thankful for every sale and...

Made barely anything from erotica, any advice?

    PUBLISHING
That's a great plan, assuming you have the experience and ability to write an epic, kickass, timeless book like "The Millionaire Fastlane." However, IMO, most writers are better off writing multiple books, both to boost their visibility and to offer multiple products to their fans. Let's say you...

    401K cash out?

Isn't there a way cash out (not take out a loan) on your 401K as a hardship and avoid the penalty? I seem to recall our tax preparer mentioning things like job loss or health emergencies. That information is several years old, so it might not apply anymore. But it might be worth a look. Also...

Thanks!!! About the rankings, I think somewhere in the top 200-500-range is probably more likely. (I'd LOVE for it to be higher though!) Here's some interesting stats about BookBub's categories (see www.bookbub.com/partners/pricing), along with some stats from my books in particular. About...

    Finish My Book and Publish

This sounds like excellent advice. I can attest to a similar problem in reverse. My last book, I think, was too long for my genre. It's funny how this works, but it's definitely something worth looking at.

    Finish My Book and Publish

    PUBLISHING
It sounds like you're making great progress! I wish I could recall where I heard this, but somewhere (probably on a podcast) an author mentioned he was having trouble competing in his genre, because there were so many traditionally published books, and then, he raised his price. The logic was...

Wow, I almost can't believe it...Bookbub accepted my promo!!! I know that others here were confident, but I've got to tell you, I still thought it was a longshot. Anyway, the promo isn't for another month, but I'll share the results with everyone when it's done. The BookBub promo is for...

Yup! As a matter of fact, that's on my plans for this next week, to submit a 99 cent promo-request for Book#1. Now that I have two other books, the timing finally seems right, because it could potentially result in crossover sales. It'll be interesting to see if they accept me, and if so, what...

Happily, I never feel this way, and I don't think you should either. :) IMO, even if ten people had the same plot idea, all ten books would be very different. Consider this: What makes a book unique? The story itself? Or the way it's told? Personally, I think it's the way that it's told. This...

Thanks so much for the congrats! As far as outsourcing, I totally see what you're saying, but I'd never do that. Each writer has a unique voice. For whatever reason, readers have embraced the "voice" of my current pen name. I'd never risk my current success by introducing a new voice to the...

Thanks so much! Since it's near the first of the month, this reminds me that it's time for an update... Book#3 is still doing well -- better than Book#1 at this stage, but worse than Book#2 at this stage. During its first week, I sold about 1,200 copies of Book#3. Now, I'm selling almost 100 a...

It's a contemporary romance. I'm sorry, but I don't share my pen name, so I won't be providing a link. I know many people here do, and I really admire them for it. But for various reasons, that's just not me.

Actually, this is exactly what I did, except I didn't "assume" anything. I did zero marketing. I didn't even have a Facebook, twitter or Web presence. I just wrote the very best book I could in a niche that seemed to have a lot of buyers. But here's what I DID do. I wrote a full-length novel...

I'm no expert, but if it were me, I'd release them at least a week or two apart. Here's why...For all of my books, sales peaked approximately one month after release. This seems to suggest that releasing book#2 while book#1 is at the peak of its sales cycle would help boost sales of book#1 and...
