I'm 44 years old and have been in technology sales since I graduated from OU in '97 (Boomer Sooner!). I had an enormously successful career working for Fortune 500 Companies, Mid-Size Firms, and eventually settled on startups in the mid-oughts. In 2008 was working for a Start-up that was "starting-down" if you know what I mean, and I had just read the 4-hour work week. So, instead of updating my resume (which is what I used to do in that situation), I built my own ecommerce business.
I worked my a$$ off in that business...you know the drill, 16 hour days (20 hour days during the holidays)...grew the business like wild fire on the back of Google AdWords and Bing Ads. During all of this I launched my PPC Consulting Business, and through some of my long-term business relationships I built that business to where we manage hundreds of thousands of dollars in monthly ad spend for a few dozen clients. Earlier this year I decided to sell the eCommerce business (best decision ever).
Right in the middle of that sale I picked up TMF. My original idea was to focus on my consulting business, but after reading TMF I realized it didn't scale the way I wanted it to. I had zero desire to build a huge agency with dozens of employees and billing everyone out. I really just wanted to produce something worthwhile and build a successful fastlane business. The consulting business inherently trades time for money. I will not do that anymore.
So, to make a short story unbearable...I've been working on building my Fastlane Business. I'm building an educational community for online advertisers and agencies. You can learn more at BattleBridgeLabs.com, it is in the early stages...but it definitely fits the Fastlane criteria (it has to because the idea came while I was reading the book).
We offer newbie, intermediate, and advanced PPC training for online advertisers. If you advertise with AdWords, Bing Ads, YouTube, or Facebook...we have educational resources for you. Once we have a few training courses underway, we are launching the community/forum. This will be a paid community of people who are serious about driving traffic. We also have a private forum/community for agencies large and small. One of the problems we had as a consultancy/agency was the lack of really good advanced training out there. Something that existed outside of a larger PPC Agency with ulterior motives, and something smaller than the Google AdWords community. Since it didn't exist, we built it.
Fortunately, I have a decent following in the space, and I was recently tagged to write a 4 Part series on PPC for eCommerce at Americommerce.com. You can read it here: The Hitchhiker's Guide to PPC for eCommerce. It has been a nice launch pad for the new business, and I am confident our first class of Newbie PPC Advertisers will be very active and dynamic.
