We May Have Been Closer Than We Realized: A Lesson in KE

Skip to bottom for TLDR + Lesson bullets. I recently finished Unscripted, and it made me stop reflect again on my first swing at a business. I started it in 2015 with a good friend. We were in the service industry at the time. We had no idea how to start a business. We had never heard of MJ...

    I've Read UNSCRIPTED!

    GOLD! HOT!
Finished Unscripted last week (on audio)! I love that MJ goes into more detail around scaling business models that weren't considered fast lane in TMF. As usually happens with the best audiobooks, I'm gonna have to order the physical book now too.

    Is it Lindy?

Great distinction there! (between systems that naturally evolve vs ideas/practices/etc) So where do you see a need/problem fitting? - Would you say it fits on the "natural evolution" side of things?

    Is it Lindy?

Totally fair points! There's definitely room to get fairly philosophical with this topic, and in the end it's probability not certainty. So far, I haven't seen a good reason not to consider it when trying to put a problem or potential solution in context.

    Is it Lindy?

Lindy does not apply to things that physically breakdown, it's about relevance of ideas or parish-able things. So that's the ideas in a book vs the physical book.

    Is it Lindy?

You're right, that chart is bullshit. I grabbed it off the internet when posting this to help illustrate the point but, like you said, it reads "low value things have a high life expectancy", which is not at all what Lindy is about. A much better chart would be this:

    Is it Lindy?

I'd say that if the solution is antiquated then both the problem and solution have probably been around for at least a while. If you're trying to disrupt a stagnant solution with a fresh one, then I guess it's up to you to do it in a way that you think will last, but the solution is probably...

    Is it Lindy?

Who here has considered the Lindy Effect when evaluating fast lane business ideas? The Lindy Effect says that if something has existed for x number of years, you can reasonably expect it to exist for that same number of years into the future. More info on the idea in this video, article, and...

    GOLD! HOT!
Finished it a few weeks ago but forgot to post here! It has been a fantastic listen (I started with the audiobook but have since bought a hardcopy for reference). Now I'm in the middle of Unscripted

Luck shouldn't play such a big role in financial success

    HOT!
We're part of a complex system and unless we want to kill off life, luck is always going to play a role. Luck even plays a bigger role than we like to admit. Anyways, I think the value in your idea (at least from the perspective of the person that's receiving aid) is that it increases their...

    Nassim Taleb's barbell strategy

There isn't an entire book on the barbell strategy, maybe a chapter or two but I forget what book it's in... maybe Antifragile. I'd recommend reading him because the barbell strategy is really just a way to apply some of the ideas in his Incerto.

    Nassim Taleb's barbell strategy

Yes! Taleb's work is fantastic. His ideas and their previous iterations run deep and have a lot of interesting implications across so many fields. I spent most of 2020 reading his work, and am only just getting started on ideas that have influenced him. I don't have much experience with it yet...
