    Fastlane Ideas For Engineers

    IDEA
Welcome to the forum. As an engineer you should be well placed to develop a fastlane because much of you education will no doubt have been spent solving problems in one way or another. However, what direction you take and how you proceed is really down to as you need to find a direction that...

New product. Not sure what the correct path would be.

Patents are an obvious choice for protecting your IP. However, you need to look at the wider context as well. In some areas of industry the cost and time scale of the patent process are not worth the effort. You also need to consider how you will enforce the patent- as this can be costly. Your...

When is it ever okay to comfortable in the slowlane?

    HOT! MINDSET SLOWLANE
I been in the slow lane for 10+ years and it is indeed comfortable. Looking back however, I can see how my career has shaped me, rather than me shaping my career/ lifestyle. I believe a big part is giving yourself the freedom and opportunity to be who you really are. If you draw complete...

Should I give entrepreneurship a break for a while?

    MINDSET
Although you might not have any money in the bank you should now know what doesn't work. Take a really honest audit of yourself and what you have been doing. ID the mistake and problems and build from there. I frequently run experimental in my slow lane and hear complaints when I get a negative...

    Help me develop my product

GIlman raises some excellent points. The headline idea sounds good but without a clear path to market it is difficult to evaluate properly. Define the target customer and the problem you hope to address. This will then help you understand the value your ideal will give and therefore if people...

Need info on labelling, packaging, inspecting new food/supplement product.

Sounds to me like you are going about this the right way. Packaging and branding are important but the product is key. Get that right and you can sub out the rest. Though i have no experience with food packaging (other than as a consumer) there are likely to be some standard options available...

The legal issue will depend on the jurisdiction you wish to sell into. For example, there is a huge difference between the USA and Europe I believe. Is the plan to manufacture and package yourself? My other half looked into something similar some time back and found plenty of contract kitchens...

    Are Manufacturer's innovative or copycats?

Innovation is important, though what they innovate depends on the business plan. Some manufacturing companies focus 100% on manufacture and have limited sales presence. They therefore only make what they are asked to make. In this case the competition comes from other subcontract manufacturers...

Create a start-up while employed? or focus resources on start-up?

    EXECUTION
As a slight aside. I spent some time with an early stage investment manager recently. I was told they actively look for people with life/ work experience as they generally get a better return than if they back recent graduates- there are obviously exceptions though! Sent from my iPhone using...

How did you find your industry??

    HOT!
I think this a fantastic approach. Part of reason i ended up here was because i am not happy with the industry i am in. Though it is important to recognise that all industries have their negatives and even the most glamorous can become tedious at times.
